Hilton Hotels New Smartphone Room Key

The Hilton Hotels smartphone app and upcoming room key technology is about to revolutionize the hotel industry.

I recently stayed at a Hilton Hotel and was surprised to learn I could select the room of my choosing just by using the smartphone app.  Want a corner room?  Something close to the elevator?  A room with a pool view?  No problem.  Simply use the app to see the layout of every room on every floor — complete with photos — then make your choice.

Oh, but Hilton Hotels isn’t done there.  Next up is the extinction of the room key.

Hilton Hotels room keyWe all hate that plastic room keycard.  It frequently doesn’t work, or we frequently lose it, or something always seems to go terribly wrong with it.  With a massive $550 million plan, Hilton Hotels is about to outfit its rooms with smartphone-enabled locks, allowing guests to forgo the traditional front desk check-in entirely. After using the smartphone app to digitally check-in to your chosen room, Hilton Hotels will simply send your smartphone a key code, which will then unlock the door and prevent you from ever needing to use a keycard again.

The concept behind the smartphone room key isn’t a new one. Marriott has considered the idea since 2006.  Also, Starwood Hotels and Resorts announced it will introduce similar technology at select locations.  Services such as Zipcar and CarToGo already allow users to unlock rental vehicles with the simple push of a button on a smartphone app, so why not hotels? With Hilton Hotels planning to have most of its 4,200 properties smartphone-enabled by 2016, it will be an innovator in bringing smartphone locks to the masses.

For an ever growing smartphone-savvy culture, imagine getting to check-in, pick your own room, unlock your doors and check-out all without ever having to talk to or even see anyone? That is truly the wave of the future.
