House Committee Selection Spurs Pelosi-GOP Fight

Spread The Love

A House committee investigation into the January 6th Capitol Hill riot has turned bitter after 2 “ReTrumplicans” were disqualified from participating by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Politics
A US House of Representatives investigation into the events that led up to and included the deadly riot by Donald Trump’s MAGA minions was supposed to be a bipartisan event.  However, Republicans — who were originally flabbergasted that Trump sent his sycophants to attack them — eventually grew fearful (again) of the wrath of Trump and magically decided an investigation was no longer necessary.  So, Democrats opted to proceed with the investigation on their own.

House Committee

In an attempt to keep the investigation impartial, Speaker Pelosi agreed to allow Democrats and Republicans to participate in the House committee investigation.  However, House Minority Leader (and noted Trump-flunkie) Kevin McCarthy attempted to derail the investigation by planting 2 ReTrumplican congressmen on the panel.  Their presence would have been to gum up the process and report back to Trump what was going on inside the committee.

Needless to say, Speaker Pelosi was having none of it and took the unprecedented move to refuse to seat Reps. Jim Jordan of Ohio and Jim Banks of Indiana on the House committee — both of whom joined Trump in questioning the legitimacy of the election results, refused to call President Biden the legitimate winner, encouraged Donald Trump not to concede the election, stood on the House floor on January 6th and attempted to thwart the certification of Joe Biden as the next president, and have already made countless moves to undermine the investigation.

House Committee

Although Pelosi agreed to seat the other Republican selections to the committee (Reps. Rodney Davis of Illinois, Kelly Armstrong of North Dakota, and Troy Nehls of Texas), her move prompted McCarthy, Trump, and ReTrumplicans to have a hissy fit.  McCarthy even threatened to “take his marbles and go home.”

Yes, Minority Leader McCarthy was so angry he could not get his way that he called a hastily arranged press conference and announced that Republicans would boycott the panel altogether. His reason? According to him, the House committee investigation was nothing more than a political exercise by Democrats to hurt the GOP.

Oh, boo-hoo!

As if that wasn’t enough, McCarthy then attempted to flip the blame of January 6th from Donald Trump to Speaker Pelosi and claimed it was the Speaker who should have done more to protect the Capitol from the mob of Trump fanatics.

“Why was the Capitol so ill-prepared for that day, when they knew on December 14th that they had a problem?”  McCarthy said of the Democrats.  “Pelosi has created a sham process.”

In an interesting and strange turn of events, Republican Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming (who was once the #3 leader of House Republicans until the GOP kicked her out for speaking the truth about Trump), rebuked McCarthy for playing politics with the House committee investigation and for ignoring the facts in an effort to appease Donald Trump.

“The rhetoric that we have heard from the minority leader is disingenuous,” Ms. Cheney told reporters Wednesday on the steps of the Capitol.  “At every opportunity, the minority leader has attempted to prevent the American people from understanding what happened, to block this investigation.”

She added that Speaker Pelosi was right to bar Reps. Jordan and Banks from the panel and said Mr. Jordan was a potential “material witness” and Mr. Banks had “disqualified himself” with recent comments disparaging the committee’s work.

Ouch!

Nevertheless, with Democrats holding the majority in the House, Speaker Pelosi has the last word on the matter.  Jordan and Banks will not join the House committee investigation no matter how many tantrums McCarthy attempts on behalf of Trump.

Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, the chairman of the select committee, said he would “not be distracted by sideshows” and pledged to move forward with the panel’s work, including its first public hearing next week.  The committee hearings will begin with Capitol and District of Columbia police officers testifying about how they fought off Trump’s mob.

Stay tuned…

Lol Nancy told Trump stooges to get off her committee. I love it. All they were going to do is be his spies anyway.
