I HAVE SINNED!
OKWASSUP! has been closely following the strange disappearance of Republican SC Gov. Mark Sanford over the weekend. At first many called it “much ado about nothing,” saying the Governor would simply return to work after a weekend break. But nothing could have been further from the truth as one could have never predicted the events of yesterday, when Gov. Sanford admitted to infidelity.
`
There are several things wrong with the Sanford story beyond the obvious angle. First, Gov. Sanford abandoned his state, which is a big NO NO! He just up and fled for nearly 5 days, without letting his family, staff, or constituents of South Carolina ever know. Had some emergency come up within the state, the leader was MIA, which is incomprehensible. Second, it has been discovered that Sanford has taken many trips to Argentina AT TAXPAYER’S EXPENSE, which is also a huge NO NO! Surely the people of South Carolina should not have to foot the bill for Sanford’s extra-marital trysts, but it’s this sort of foolishness that already has some within the state whispering “Impeachment.” Third, it is believed Sanford thought he could slip away to Argentina, visit his “chick-on-the-side,” and sneak back into South Carolina without anyone ever knowing he was away or even why. But the media foiled his plans when reporters were tipped off that Sanford was not “hiking,” but was out of town and would be arriving at Atlanta’s Hartsfield Airport where they were waiting for him. The swiftly staged press conference and confession by Sanford is said to have only been scheduled once Sanford realized he was caught and details of his affair would come out. And finally, Sanford (like many other conservatives) has always taken a “holier-than-thou” approach to morality. He has always placed himself at the very pinnacle of morality and beyond reproach when it comes to family values. In other words, he’s been among the first to cast a stone against the very activity he himself has now admitted being guilty of.
The Mark Sanford admission was a bit creepy, and probably told us all more information than we ever needed (or even wanted) to know. But it had all the trappings of a Made-For-TV movie: love, sex, betrayal, dishonesty, conflict, scandal. Special kudos to Mrs. Sanford for NOT playing the role of the “Supportive Wife” who through it all still stands by the side of her jerk for a most uncomfortable photo op. She was not there.
