Impeachment Day 2: Lawmakers = Lawbreakers
On Wednesday, Donald Trump Impeachment Day 2 began with opening arguments from Democratic House Managers and ended with ‘The Donald’ and his GOP cronies thumbing their noses at the law by brazenly flaunting themselves as lawbreakers.
Politics
Rep. Adam Schiff, the lead Democratic House Manager, began the day’s arguments with a warning to his Republican colleagues and Americans all: if Donald Trump is allowed to abuse his presidential power and to completely ignore the authority of the legislative branch of government, then a dangerous precedent will be set for ANY future president to do the same.
“I don’t think the impeachment power is a relic. If it is a relic, I wonder how much longer our republic can succeed,” Schiff said in framing Trump’s wrongdoing as a national crisis demanding a non-partisan remedy. “If we don’t stand up to this peril today, we will write the history of our decline with our own hand.”
Schiff laid out the facts of Trump’s crime in a way that was so simple, it was clear for the average American (read: voter) to understand. In fact, he was so compelling, Sen. Lindsay Graham (a noted Trump flunkie) caught up with him in the halls of the US Capitol to say “Good job, you’re very well spoken.”
Regrettably, however, Schiff’s stellar Impeachment Day 2 performance did little to curtail Trump’s utter disregard for the law and for Senate Republicans’ desire to grow a set of testicles and stand up to the man who has hijacked the GOP.
In perhaps one of the dumbest moves in trial history, Donald Trump took to the airwaves on Wednesday to brag that he has successfully stymied the Democrats in gathering evidence.
“We’re doing very well. I got to watch enough. I thought our team did a very good job. But honestly, we have all the material. They don’t have the material,” Trump boasted.
HUH???
“But honestly, we have all the material. They don’t have the material.” – Donald J. Trump
One of the 2 Articles of Impeachment is regarding Trump’s blatant Obstruction of Congress. So, for him to go on national television and brag that he is continuing to obstruct Congress is unprecedented.
“The second article of impeachment was for obstruction of Congress: covering up witnesses and documents from the American people. This morning the President not only confessed to it, he bragged about it,” Rep. Val Demmings of the House impeachment team announced only moments after Trump’s braggadocious blunder.
Then, as if that wasn’t already enough, 21 Republican senators left the Senate chamber DURING the opening arguments to tend to their own affairs, conduct interviews, etc. — which is clearly a violation of impeachment rules, since they were absent from hearing vital information presented by Democratic House Managers.
Through their disappearing act, Republicans made it crystal clear they are not taking the proceedings seriously, they have already reached a conclusion without the need to hear any statements or facts, and that they (along with Trump) are above the law and can break the rules without consequence so long as they remain in power.
Or, in other words, not only has Donald Trump actively thumbed his nose at the law and the impeachment process, but his GOP protectors have now joined him in doing the same.
And that was just Impeachment Day 2!
Or, in other words, not only has Donald Trump actively thumbed his nose at the law and the impeachment process, but his GOP protectors have now joined him in doing the same. […]- DJ Yep. Clearly showing the world they he and his Repub cronies have nothing but Contempt for the Constitution and the Rule of Law. And sadly, are we really that surprised by their behavior? Nope. THIS is who they Are and have Always been. But thanks to Trump it’s ALL out in the Open now. So then if America is to devolve to become little more than a Banana Republic the Repbs will own that and American history will bare witness of it all- especially of those most responsible for the destruction of Our democracy. Their family names will live on in American infamy. But in the meantime, the Dems should stay the course and do what… Read more »
