Is President Biden mentally incapacitated and unfit to seek a 2nd term for the presidency?
Politics :
That’s the question being asked in political circles from coast to coast after Mr. Biden’s mental acuity was recently called into question by a member of his own Justice Department.
By now, you’ve probably heard about Special Counsel Robert Hur and his conclusion that President Joe Biden should not be charged for mishandling classified material because he is “a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory” who’d be impossible to convict. Hur called the president’s memory “hazy,” “fuzzy,” “faulty,” “poor” and having “significant limitations.” He then went on to add that Mr. Biden “did not remember, even within several years, when his son Beau died” and needed the special counsel to refresh his memory regarding the years he served as vice president in 2 separate instances (“if it was 2013 — when did I stop being Vice President?”; “in 2009, am I still Vice President?”).
Almost immediately, an angry President Biden called a hastily arranged press conference to negate Hur’s remarks and prove that his memory and mental capabilities remain sharp.
“My memory’s fine. Take a look at what I’ve done since I became president,” Mr. Biden barked to members of the press.
“I’m well-meaning and I’m an elderly man and I know what the hell I’m doing. I’ve been president, I put this country back on its feet. I don’t need his recommendation,” he added.
Now that the president has been tagged as incapacitated, all hell has broken loose. Mr. Biden is angry with Attorney General Merrick Garland and members of the Justice Department who have introduced concern over his ability to run the country.
“What Democrats do is they bend over backward not to look partisan, and then they end up hiring people that are partisan but in the other direction,” said a Biden donor who spoke on condition of anonymity about the top law enforcement official in the country. “There’s no question in my mind that the villain here is Merrick Garland.”
Members of the Democratic Party are angry and believe the timing of Hur’s report during an election year is eerily similar to the time former FBI Director James Comey threw Hillary Clinton under the bus while she was running against Donald Trump.
“It really felt like it was another instance of a very high-profile investigator who was coming out with a conclusion that he likely knew would not be accepted or embraced by many people and kind of attempting to even out the scales,” former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe said.
“In other words, to play to the sort of … the segment of the audience that was going to be frustrated by the fact that he concluded not to pursue charges,” he added. “That’s what it felt like to me.”
Others have since come out in support of President Biden and against Hur and the Justice Dept.
“The way the president’s demeanor in that report was characterized could not be more wrong on the facts and [are] clearly politically motivated,” Vice President Kamala Harris said on Friday in response to questions from reporters at the White House.
”We should give everyone grace, and I can’t imagine someone would try to use our son’s death to score political points,” First Lady Jill Biden told campaign donors in an email. “If you’ve experienced a loss like that, you know that you don’t measure it in years — you measure it in grief.”
“What I don’t think is correct — and I think the vast majority of legal experts agree with me on this — is [the] gratuitous, superfluous statements about his memory, not as it relates to this particular case or the facts relating to the handling of classified documents, but as it relates to other things, including memory about the particular date and precise date of his son’s death that had no place in this document,” former US Attorney Preet Bharara said Sunday in an interview with ABC News.
“In a context in which you appointed special counsel to be above politics and away from politics, he’s provided political grist to the opponents of Joe Biden, as a matter of politics,” he added.
Has President Biden’s advanced age left him mentally incapacitated and unable to run for a 2nd term? Or, are the claims that his mind is gone deeply overblown and politically motivated?
