The 4th of July, or Independence Day, is frequently celebrated with outdoor barbecues, beach visits, and a day off from work. However, the summer holiday is mostly known for setting off party-style explosives. But, why?

The history of fireworks celebrating America’s independence from British rule dates back to the Revolutionary War, hence the national anthem lyrics: “And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air.”

DJ, thank you for the video. I think I already knew that fireworks had been around since the Revolutionary War. But I didn’t know that John Adams played any role in how Americans should celebrate Independence Day/July 4th.
