At least 34 people were killed and more than 170 were injured in explosions at Brussels-Zaventem Airport and Maelbeek metro station during the morning rush. Surveillance cameras captured the moment a suspected suicide bomb detonated at 8am Belgium time (3am ET).
The footage shows a huge flash and then hordes of people running for cover. As smoke filled the terminal, many stunned passengers fell to the floor while others fled in terror. A Starbucks was apparently ground zero for the bomb inside the airport.
Seconds later, another bomb exploded on a subway train near the European Union offices in downtown Brussels, forcing passengers to evacuate the tunnel in total darkness to their safety.
Airport security cameras captured the image of 3 men pushing several heavy suitcases through the terminal. Two of the men were wearing a single glove each, which likely hid the detonator device for their bombs. Â Authorities suspect 2 of the men were killed in the blast, while a 3rd man remains at large. His bomb failed to detonate.
According to Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon, “The man left a bomb in the airport, but it didn’t explode. Lucky. And we are now looking for this guy.”
The Mayor of Brussels also provided accounts of the events.
“Two of them blew themselves up at the gates, and the third was the one pushing the cart with the suitcase,” Mayor Francis Vermeiren said. “We searched for this suitcase. The Belgian army looked for it for a long time. They found the suitcase and blew it up.”

The taxi driver who drove the 3 suspects to the airport in Brussels recognized the men in surveillance images. He immediately informed investigators of the location where he picked them up, prompting authorities to conduct a raid following the attacks. According to the driver, the men refused to let him handle their suitcases. Also, not all of the luggage the men tried to take with them would fit in the taxi, so they were forced to leave some if it behind at the residence that was eventually raided. A bomb was later found at the residence.
Among the injured are 3 Mormon missionaries from Utah who were seriously wounded in the blasts at the airport.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said in a statement that Mason Wells, 19, Richard Norby, 66, and Joseph Empey, 20, were accompanying a French colleague who was heading to the US and was also wounded.
The US Air Force said one of its service members from Nato command, as well as several of his relatives were also injured. Their names and details of their conditions have not been released.
All of Brussels is now on a Level 4 lockdown and all residents have been told to stay in place. Further, security measures have been ramped up at all US airports, transportation hubs, tunnels and bridges. Security at Newark International Airport has been increased, including the visible presence of Homeland Security. New York City also raised the terror alert, placing police and armed military guards in underground subway stations, Times Square and other tourist spots.
ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attacks, which is believed to be in retribution for the arrest in Brussels on Friday of Paris attack suspect Salah Abdeslam. Authorities say the attackers are from the same network behind the November massacres in Paris, which left 130 dead.
