A “former” JetBlue flight attendant who told a disrespectful passenger to F**k-Off, then used the plane’s inflatable slide to quit his job and escape to his car at JFK Airport in New York on Monday, has become somewhat of a celebrity.
39-year-old flight attendant Steven Slater was apparently mad as hell and was not gonna take it anymore. On Flight 1052 from Pittsburgh, Slater got into a verbal disagreement with a passenger who refused to remain seated while the plane taxied toward the gate. The passenger insisted on gathering his carry-on bags from an overhead bin while the plane was still in motion, and reportedly conked Slater over the head with his suitcase in the process, prompting Slater to demand an apology from the unruly passenger. But instead of saying “I’m sorry,” the passenger called Slater a “Mother-f**ker” which sent the 28 year veteran flight attendant into a rage.
Slater then took to the public address system, saying “To the passenger who called me a Mother-f**ker, F**k You. I’ve been in this business 28 years. And that’s it, I’m done.” He then grabbed a few beers from the galley, released the emergency exit slide, tossed his carry-on luggage down the slide, then slid down behind it and disappeared across the tarmac, much to the surprise (and some applause) of the shocked passengers and his fellow co-workers. According to a passenger: “He said he had a bad day, that this passenger had set him off, I thought it was a crazy way to quit your job. And I thought if only we could all quit our jobs so spectacularly, but not get arrested in the process.”
Needless to say, Slater was arrested soon after at his nearby home in Queens by Port Authority of New York And New Jersey police on charges of criminal mischief, reckless endangerment and trespassing. He has since become somewhat of an Internet-celebrity, with Tweeters, bloggers and Facebook groups celebrating the theatrics of his resignation from a “regular Joe” who had taken enough abuse, and just wasn’t going to take any more!
