Jimmy Carter Braves His Final Days
As a former President of the United States, Jimmy Carter has experienced some days that required him to be brave — but none could be like the days he’s experiencing now.
Current Events
Recently, former President Carter announced that he has liver cancer, which has spread. If that wasn’t enough, Mr. Carter announced only a few days later that doctors discovered the cancer has also spread to his brain.  At 90-years-old, it is inoperable.
So, what did President Carter do after hearing the grim news? Â He went to church and taught Sunday School.
Sadly, the humble peanut farmer from Georgia who became America’s 39th president is likely in his final days. Â However, he’s not quietly fading into the night. Â He is relying heavily on his faith while appreciating each and every day he has left.
“It’s in the hands God, whom I worship, and I’ll be prepared for anything that comes,” Mr. Carter said. “I’m ready for anything and looking forward to a new adventure.”
Although he was lampooned for his 4 years as president, Mr. Carter has become somewhat of a hero in his post-presidency. For his work with The Carter Center, to monitoring elections throughout the world, to the many years he invested in building homes with his bare hands for Habitat For Humanity, to winning a Nobel Peace Prize, Mr. Carter is credited with giving meaning and purpose to the title “former president.”
Now, President Carter admits that after hearing the last bit of news about his health, he believed he had only “a few weeks left.” Regardless, he says he is “at ease” with the diagnosis, and is sustained by his family and his faith.
“I’ve had a wonderful life,” Mr. Carter said. “I’ve had thousands of friends.”
President Carter — we salute you!
NYTimes Reader:
Jimmy Carter asked us to be good stewards of the earth; *Others* believe the planet is ours to exploit and pollute as we wish. Carter lives humbly while *Others* worship money. Carter seeks justice and an equitable resolution for the Israeli/Palestine situation; *Others* follows the Netanyahu/Adelson/AIPAC hardline Zionist position (which itself follows many Evangelicals' belief that Israeli politics will bring Christ back to earth). Carter is a man of peace; Other men create hostilities needlessly and exploits them for dramatic effect. A lot of Christians could learn quite a lot from Carter's teachings on Christ. […]
I grew up learning the kind of Christian morality that's very much in line with Jimmy Carter. A good man.
"President Carter — we salute you!'
Well said DJ.
