Juneteenth is now an official federal holiday!
Current Events
Saturday is Juneteenth — or the date we commemorate as the official end of slavery in America, which was June 19, 1865. Now, Juneteenth has become the 11th federal US holiday.
Earlier this week, Republican senators ditched their opposition to the celebration and surprisingly passed a unanimous resolution to recognize the African-American date in history as a federal holiday. On Wednesday, the House of Representatives followed suit and approved the measure by a count of 415 to 14. By Thursday, the bill reached the desk of President Biden, who hastily signed it into law and officially made the commemorative date of the end of slavery an American holiday.
US lawmakers haven’t approved a new holiday in nearly 40 years. The last holiday passed was the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. back in 1983.
In light of last year’s George Floyd murder and Black Lives Matter protests, the recognition of Juneteenth will forever be a welcomed addition to the America calendar.
HAPPY JUNETEENTH!
