JUSTICE SOTOMAYOR
On Saturday morning, Judge Sonia Sotomayor became JUSTICE Sonia Sotomayor, breaking boundaries as the first Hispanic ever to be named to the U.S. Supreme Court in history. Chief Justice John Roberts conducted the official swearing-in at 11am EDT, with the new Justice’s mother and brother holding the bible during her oath. Hispanic communities from South Miami to Spanish Harlem celebrated by watching the ceremony in a first ever televised broadcast of the swearing-in of a Supreme Court Justice. President Obama also watched via television and plans to host the Sotomayor family at the White House later this week for a private reception. Justice Sotomayor will report to the bench on September 9th, joining her other “Supreme” colleagues at the start of a new court session.
