Deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre became only the 2nd Black woman in history to hold the daily White House press briefing on Wednesday. Born in Fort-de-France, Martinique to Haitian parents, the 43-year-old said that although she recognized and appreciated the “historic nature” of the moment, she also acknowledged that the White House is not about “one person.”
.
“It’s a real honor to be standing here today,” Pierre told reporters inside the James S. Brady briefing room. “I appreciate the historic nature. I really do,” she added. “But I believe that … being behind this podium, being in this room, being in this building is not about one person. It’s about what we do on behalf of the American people.”
Karine Jean Pierre is the first Black woman in 30 years to brief reporters from the White House press room. Judy Smith, who was a deputy press secretary under President George H.W. Bush, was the first Black female to hold that honor back in 1991.
Ms. Jean-Pierre is a former senior adviser to the Biden campaign and later served as chief-of-staff to Kamala Harris. Before that, she worked for former President Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns and served as a political analyst for NBC and MSNBC.
She joined the Biden press team with connections after her role as chief public affairs officer at MoveOn.org and on the campaign for the American Civil Liberties Union’s Reproductive Freedom Initiative.
Karine Jean-Pierre was originally considered for the White House press secretary position before that job was eventually given to Jen Psaki. However, with Psaki recently saying that she doesn’t expect to stay in her position for President Biden’s entire first term, the permanent job is rumored to be Jean-Pierre’s to lose.
Stay tuned…

Hear! Hear! Congratulations indeed!
Btw- Though I’ve watched Ms. Jean Pierre on MSNBC over the years (since Pres. Obama), I actually just learned of her sexual orientation a few months ago.
