Kerry Confirmed as Secretary of State

Spread The Love

Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts has been confirmed as the next U.S. Secretary of State.

With a vote of 94-3, the full senate confirmed Kerry last night, paving the way for him to be sworn-in as early as today.  Kerry will replace Hillary Clinton, who has long desired to return to public life, but has recently teased the media with hints that she may be prepping for another run for president in 2016.

The 69-year-old Kerry, who is the son of a diplomat, served honorably as a decorated Vietnam War veteran.  He is a 5-term U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, the outgoing chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the 2004 Democratic nominee for president.

And i just finished reading that Gov. Patrick has appointed William "Mo' Cowan (his own former chief-of-staff and legal counsel) to hold Kerry's Senate seat in the interim, until the election in June.

Cowan comes from very humble beginnings in rural North Carolina. He's a graduate of Harvard and Harvard Law School…and then became a "prominent Boston lawyer."

His appt means "that there will be two black senators serving together for the first time in American history. Neither were elected — Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) was appointed in December after former Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) left the chamber in the middle of his term."

I'm thinking, Barney (as in Frank) is probably not amused by Gov. Patrick's pick. But that's life.

I was bothered by 2 things regarding Frank's sudden interest in Kerry's senate seat anyway:

1. Frank's stated opposition to the President nominating Chuck Hagel for Secretary of Defense. Oh I know Frank APPEARED to be backing off of that opposition. But I wasn't buying it.

2. The arrogant insistence by a few left-wing media folks <side-eyeing Chris Matthews> that Gov. Patrick HAD to appoint Frank to that seat because, in their opinion, Frank is the best choice.

Guess the Governor felt differently.
