The nation’s third-largest city made history with the election of Mayor-elect Lori Lightfoot, making the city of 2.7 million the nation’s largest ever to tap a black woman and openly gay mayor.

But in the end, Lightfoot’s race, gender and sexual orientation mattered little to most voters in this city that’s exhausted by political corruption, rampant gun violence and a widening chasm between the rich and poor.

In the Garfield Park neighborhood – an area devastated by violence and deep poverty – 65-year-old truck driver Charles Hill said he voted for Lightfoot, a former federal prosecutor and corporate lawyer, out of frustration with the establishment politicians who have dominated Chicago.

“I hope things get better, but I’m not going to hold my breath,” said Hill, after casting his ballot at a polling site at a neighborhood school where only 14% of students met or exceeded state benchmarks for math.

Hill appeared hardly alone in expressing his disgust with old-style Chicago politics. Lightfoot managed to trounce her opponent, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle.

Back again now. Forgive me but am I the only one who is not impressed with her win? Let me first say I grew up in Chicago. My family still lives there so I know all about her and the city and all that. I respect the history being made about the first woman and the first gay person and everything. But with all the problems Chicago has I have to say I do not see Miss Lightfoot being the answer. I really hope I am wrong and I wish her all success in the world. But neither her or Preckwinkle made me all that enthusiastic.Congratulations to her for making history now prove to me and everybody else you can turn this city around.

As a Chicagoan…I wasn’t impressed with neither candidate. Lightfoot is the lesser of TWO evils…smh. Now we’ll see what Mess Rahm left…since he’s running out on what he said was the best job in the world. […]

I guess that the nation is ready for change and to embrace gay and lesbian politicians. My thing is be honest. Do your damn job that you were elected to do. […]

Yep…just “be honest” and “do your damn job.”

Don’t get me wrong. I really like visiting Chicago. But I can NOT…I will NOT…do Chicago winters!!!

It is commendable that (given Chicago’s long history of “corruption and insider dealings”) Ms. Lighfoot was able to use her “outsider” status as a major selling point…voters bought it and gave her a decisive win over Ms. Preckwinkle, “a better-known, longtime politician.”

The fact that most voters in Chicago don’t care about her sexuality is a definite sign of progress in that city.

Now..whether she’ll actually be able to make a real difference in that city? Only time will tell.
