Luigi Mangione was arrested on Monday in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. He was at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania when an employee recognized him from the myriad photos in the news and called the police. Initially, he was taken into custody for questioning as a “person of interest.” However, police soon placed him under arrest and have since charged him with possession of a loaded firearm, possession of a forged instrument, criminal possession of a weapon, and 2nd-degree murder.
Luigi Mangione is a 26-year-old Maryland native who graduated as valedictorian of the private all-boys Gilman School in 2016. He went on to major in computer science at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in engineering and was top in his class. Authorities began to suspect Mangione after discovering he read the book “Industrial Society and Its Future” by Theodore Kaczynski, AKA The Unabomber. He also displayed an online interest in self-improvement, clean eating, and critiques of contemporary technology.
In a report from The New York Times, the smoking gun against Luigi Mangione came once police officers had him in custody. According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, Mangione was carrying a 3-D printed ghost gun similar to the weapon used to kill Brian Thompson, along with a gun silencer. He also had in his possession several fake IDs (all with different names) as well as a handwritten manifesto that spoke to his “motivation and mindset” and illustrated his “ill will toward corporate America.”
The 262-word handwritten document said that while “UnitedHealthcare’s market capitalization has grown, American life expectancy has not.” He condemned companies that “continue to abuse our country for immense profit because the American public has allowed them to get away with it.”
Mangione warned that “these parasites had it coming,” and said, “I do apologize for any strife and trauma, but it had to be done.” He also reportedly wrote an admission of guilt, saying that he acted alone and was self-funded, adding: ‘To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn’t working with anyone.
So, why did he do it?
According to friends, Luigi Mangione suffered a surfing accident and underwent a botched back surgery. His personality changed, he distanced himself from family and friends, and he apparently snapped after having to deal with insurance coverage to fix his back issue.
“What keeps coming up is a back surgery that changed everything for him and he went absolutely crazy,” a friend said. “Back injury happened when he was surfing in Hawaii. Surgery didn’t go great. Moved to Japan. His contact with family stopped about a year ago. Recently the family reached out to his friends from high school asking if they had info on him.”
Luigi Mangione is currently under arrest and in custody in Pennsylvania. However, he will soon be extradited to New York to face 2nd-degree murder charges.
