MALL BRAWL
The Mall of America in suburban Minneapolis was the scene of an unbelievable melee’ the day after Christmas, in a brawl that lasted for several hours and ended with 10 arrests.
More than a dozen fights broke out throughout the mall, as mobs of nearly 200 teens ran through the corridors knocking things over, grabbing merchandise and sending frightened shoppers fleeing into the streets.
A lockdown message was sent out to all 500 stores inside America’s largest mall, prompting Nordstrom’s to shut it gates and close down the store to the public. Various other shops and kiosks also closed for the night.
No one knows exactly what caused the multiple fights to break out from the food court to the mass transit system. But some mall employees said they overheard that it was a planned criminal flash mob. Many teens were seen using cell phones, in what appeared to be an organizational effort.
Although no serious injuries were reported, there was some damage done. Police and private mall security stepped up their efforts yesterday to calm a nervous shopping public and prevent any future outbursts.
