Managing Your Digital Afterlife
When a family member or friend passes away, a loved one usually handles the personal effects of the deceased and neatly ties up all the loose ends of their life. But in this day and age of modern technology, what happens to our digital life when we die?
Current Events
Facebook, Twitter, eHarmony, personal websites/blogs and others won’t know when we’ve passed on, so it’s very likely our digital lives could go on in cyberspace for perpetuity. But how creepy is it to continue seeing a dearly departed friend pop-up in your Facebook sidebar with a suggestion to “reconnect” with them? One such company is ifidie (pronounced “if I die”) that allows you to leave one final farewell message to your family and friends via Facebook. Another service is SecureSafe, which will allow you to assign a beneficiary to your online accounts. Loved ones will then be allowed to disable wall postings, delete your profile and more.
Your family and friends can be responsible for donating your clothes to charity or fighting over who gets your flatscreen TV and other prized possessions. But these new services can take care of all your digital needs at the moment of your final departure.
