Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. Born the son and grandson of ministers, he grew up to also become a Baptist minister and a social activist, who led the Civil Rights Movement in the United States beginning in the mid-1950s.

Dr. King is best known for heading the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, for playing a pivotal role in ending the legal segregation of African-American citizens in the South and other areas of the nation, as well as the creation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He will also be remembered for receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, among a myriad of other honors.

This champion of racial equality, non-violence and peace would have turned 87 this year, but was tragically gunned down and assassinated 48 years ago on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, TN.

Although he is no longer with us, his legacy lives on in our memories through his words. Here are some of the most memorable quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

More specifically, Juan's piece centered on his past interviews of Thurgood Marshall "the liberal legal giant who became first black justice of the U.S. Supreme Court" _and how Marshall (a Black liberal civil rights icon in his own right) viewed Dr. King's methods for achieving Equal Rights.
