Mask Mandate, Lawsuits, Restraining Order In Georgia

Spread The Love

The governor of Georgia is so opposed to a mask mandate that he has filed a lawsuit against the mayor of Atlanta and requested a restraining order to silence her, too.

Politics
Gov. Brian Kemp wants a mask mandate to never see the light of day in Georgia.  In fact, he has gone so far as to issue an executive order banning city officials from requiring anyone to wear a mask in the Peach State.

By contrast, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms of Atlanta desperately wants a mask mandate so as to help flatten the curve and has ordered the citizens of her city to wear masks at all times while in public.

Mask Mandate

Now, Gov. Kemp has filed a lawsuit to negate the mayor’s mask ruling and has even requested a restraining order to “silence” Mayor Bottoms from speaking on television or anywhere regarding the mask mandate fight.

“In addition to being sued over a mask mandate and voluntary advisory guidelines on COVID-19, @GovKemp has asked for an emergency injunction to ‘restrain’ me from issuing press statements and speaking to the press,” the mayor tweeted on Monday. “Far more have sacrificed too much more for me to be silent,” she added.
.

“He filed a 124-plus-page lawsuit against me this week calling for an emergency injunction to stop me from speaking about his orders,” the mayor said during a Sunday interview on CBS. “If the governor of this state had his way, I would not be allowed to speak with you today. And so this blame game is most unusual.”

Within the State of Georgia, Kemp’s no-mask ruling has not been at all popular among those hoping to get the pandemic numbers under control.

“It is officially official. Governor Kemp does not give a damn about us,” Savannah Mayor Van Johnson wrote on Twitter. “Every man and woman for himself/herself. Ignore the science and survive the best you can. In #Savannah, we will continue to keep the faith and follow the science. Masks will continue to be available!”
.

“What he continues to do is downplay not only the challenge to Georgians, but the deaths of Georgians,” former Kemp gubernatorial challenger Stacey Abrams said on MSNBC. “More than 3,000 Georgians have perished, disproportionately black and brown Georgians. And he continues to fiddle while Rome burns.”

Kemp signed an executive order last week explicitly banning Georgian cities from enacting any sort of mask mandate of their own.  In fact, his order voided existing mask mandates in more than a dozen cities or counties throughout the state.

“This lawsuit is on behalf of the Atlanta business owners and their hardworking employees who are struggling to survive during these difficult times,” Kemp tweeted. “These men and women are doing their very best to put food on the table for their families while local elected officials shutter businesses and undermine economic growth,” he continued.

“There’s some people that just do not want to wear a mask,” the governor added. “I’m sensitive to that from a political environment of having people buy into that and creating other issues out there.”

“3104 Georgians have died and I and my family are amongst the 106k who have tested positive for COVID-19. Meanwhile, I have been sued by @GovKemp for a mask mandate,” Bottoms responded. “A better use of taxpayer money would be to expand testing and contact tracing. #ATLStrong”

Initially, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (both Republicans) previously attempted to block officials of their cities and counties from issuing mask orders.  However, both have since relented. Abbott issued a mask mandate for most counties earlier this month, while Ducey allowed cities and counties to go forward with mask mandates last month.

Okay so a few thoughts on this matter starting with this………….

[In fact, his order voided existing mask mandates in more than a dozen cities or counties throughout the state. ] -DJ

Yep. But unless I’m mistaken, the mayors of those other cities in GA are….Men.

The only mayor Kemp went after personally NOT only regarding the mask mandate but also in his sorry-azz attempt to try to silence that mayor is…..a Woman. And not just a woman but a smart, confident, articulate and very powerful Black woman.

Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms represents the only kind of person in America more terrifying to powerful white men (like Trump and Kemp) than an intelligent, strong and articulate Black man.

This is a good point Truth. I never thought about that.

Kemp and Repubs like him have thrown their lot in with Trump because Trump is indeed a true refection of them. He IS the perfect leader for men like Kemp. Seriously. To Trump’s credit even he (w/his extremely low IQ) figured out years ago that the Repub Party would be a cake-walk to take control of because the Repub leadership was/is made up mostly of men who are much like him…white men of extremely low moral character w/NO true convictions other than to get and keep as much money and power as possible, by ANY means necessary. Trump definitely recognized that, like HIM, the vast majority of Repub men talk tough but are in fact, just Cowardly cons, Faking the funk. White men who aren’t just motivated primarily by racism but equally by a very real FEAR of Black people. And they truly do envy what WE have on the… Read more »

Final thought……….

When this long nightmare comes to an end – IF this long nightmare comes to an end – on Nov. 3rd, WE (ALL Americans who truly love Our country and want a more perfect Union) MUST be willing to look INSIDE ourselves as individuals, as members of families and communities and ask Ourselves how WE can work together to genuinely move Our country, forward. Recognizing first that (as my grandmother used to say) “No lie can live forever.”

America’s true history MUST be told and White supremacy and modern day Jim Crow MUST be reckoned with. Anything short of that new beginning will Fail and the next Trump-like viper who slithers into the White House will have a brain, charisma and the ability to succeed where Trump failed.

Mr.BD

This whole mask fight is because all the Repubs are scared of big bully Trump. If they disagree with him they already know he will turn on them. The only Repub that seem to have some courage is Larry Hogan in Maryland. He lit into Trump like nobodies business a couple of days ago. What is the big deal over wearing a mask? We wear seatbelts for safety so why not a dog gone mask.

Mr.BD

I forgot to say I like Keisha Lance Bottoms too. She is not ready yet to be Joe Biden’s running mate but she is sharp. She is not backing down from Kemp no matter what he says. If she keeps going she could have a real future in the Democrat party.

TPM: Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms on Wednesday night recalled a “very good conversation” she had with Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) earlier in the day when they discussed a possible settlement of his lawsuit challenging the city’s mask mandate. Kemp filed a lawsuit last week attempting to curb the city’s policy of requiring all residents to wear a face-covering while in public. Kemp’s lawsuit came a day after he signed a statewide order explicitly banning cities and counties from adopting rules requiring masks or other face coverings.  Kemp’s administration argued that Bottoms’ mask requirement mandate is “merely guidance,” which they believe defies the governor’s statewide order blocking local governments from issuing stricter coronavirus-related rules. Bottoms — who tested positive for the coronavirus earlier this month — tore into Kemp the morning after the lawsuit was filed, describing the move as “simply bizarre, quite frankly” given other cities in Georgia… Read more »

[Bottoms said they both discussed their disagreement and said the two mutually hope that they can “figure out a way to agree to disagree” without having to go to court.]

Now he knows she will not be bullied into submission. He knows he has NO legit leg to stand om. He knows he’s looks more and more like a callous fool. And most importantly he knows he cannot win this battle in the court of public opinion.

She not only comes across as smart and caring in how she’s trying to deal with all this mess but she has Right on her side and she’s gracious enough to know how to handle chumps like Kemp.
