Meghan And Harry Right About Racism?
Were Meghan and Harry right all along about racism within the royal family and its myriad palaces?
Current Events :
In 2021, Prince Harry of England and his wife, American actress Meghan Markle, dropped a bombshell on the world when they told Oprah Winfrey during a televised interview that racism was rampant within the royal family. According to the royal couple, racism toward the biracial Meghan Markle is what drove them away from the family and their royal duties.
For example, Harry told the story of Meghan being pregnant with their son, Archie, and how shocked he was when members of the palace expressed “concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he was born.” The prince also told Oprah how the UK press denigrated the biracial Meghan Markle for daring to integrate white royalty.
Since that 2021 interview, both Meghan and Harry have been outcasts among the royals. Meghan has been painted as a piranha by the British press and blamed for ripping Harry away from his family and royal duties.
And then Lady Susan Hussey happened!
In case you missed the news from last week, 83-year-old Lady Susan Hussey, who served as Queen Elizabeth’s longest-serving lady in waiting (dresser) until her recent death, was caught red-handed letting racism flow trippingly from her tongue during a recent palace event.
Last Tuesday, Queen Consort Camilla hosted an event at Buckingham Palace to raise awareness of domestic violence when Ngozi Fulani, director of the East London domestic abuse charity Sistah Space arrived at the event. She was immediately stopped at the door and interrogated by Lady Hussey who demanded to know where she “was from” (read: What is this Black woman with locks doing at a party hosted by the King and Queen Consort of England?).
Lady SH: Where are you from?
Me: Sistah Space.
SH: No, where do you come from?
Me: We’re based in Hackney.
SH: No, what part of Africa are you from?
Me: I don’t know, they didn’t leave any records.
SH: Well, you must know where you’re from, I spent time in France. Where are you from?
Me: Here. The UK.
SH: No, but what nationality are you?
Me: I am born here and am British.
SH: No, but where do you really come from? Where do your people come from?
Me: ‘My people?’ Lady, what is this?
SH: Oh I can see I am going to have a challenge getting you to say where you’re from. When did you first come here?
Me: Lady! I am a British national. My parents came here in the 50s when…
SH: Oh, I knew we’d get there in the end. You’re Caribbean!
Me: No lady, I am of African heritage, Caribbean descent, and British nationality.
SH: Oh so you’re from…
Interestingly, Lady Hussey is Prince William’s godmother.
The moment the story hit the press, the royal family and ‘The Firm’ (the nickname for the palace and its operatives) were instantly embarrassed for allowing their ‘slip’ to show in public. The palace issued a statement calling the remarks “unacceptable and deeply regrettable,” while a spokesperson for Prince William said, “racism has no place in our society.”
Hussey was fired for exposing the secret.
In that instant, the royals and their firm were caught. The racism was bold and blunt and almost natural as if such questioning had happened hundreds of times before.
On that date, racism inside the royal circle was exposed and confirmed — just as Meghan and Harry told Oprah back in 2021. The vitriol directed toward Meghan (as if she was making it all up) was misplaced. The racism was indeed real.
Will the royal family and British press now apologize for alluding that Meghan and Harry were bonkers and making up lies about the royals? Or, will they continue to pretend it was all make-believe just as the couple’s upcoming Netflix docuseries prepares to put the entire monarchy on blast?
