Michelle Obama Handles Heckler
Michele Obama may be the First Lady of the United States, but let’s not forget she’s also originally from the South Side of Chicago.
On Tuesday night while speaking at a Democratic National Committee fundraiser, Mrs. Obama was interrupted by a heckler, who shouted her down over an executive order to bar discrimination by federal contractors based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Unlike her husband, who is usually very diplomatic when his speeches are interrupted by demonstrators, Mrs. Obama was having none of it.
“One of the things that I don’t do well is this,” the First Lady said as the heckler started shouting. Mrs. Obama then surprised everyone by leaving the podium and heading directly toward the woman who was making the scene. Only inches from her face, Mrs. Obama told the shouter to “listen to me or you can take the mic, but I’m leaving. You all decide. You have one choice.”
The protester, who was later identified as Ellen Sturtz of the gay and lesbian rights organization Get EQUAL, paid $500. for a ticket to the fundraiser and for the proximity to shout at Mrs. Obama. After being escorted out, she later told reporters that she never expected Mrs. Obama to personally confront her. Apparently, the First Lady’s actions were so surprising it shut her up!
Yeah. I heard about this yesterday via A. Sullivan. And I think Andrew sums it up quite nicely:
"Ms Sturtz was protesting for something over which Michelle Obama has precisely zero control, and that the Congress has to pass, and, despite this being the top priority for Big Gay Inc. for thirty years, somehow hasn’t. Quite how this protest in a private home was supposed to accomplish anything is somewhat beyond me, but sometimes an old abrasive lesbian’s gotta do what an old abrasive lesbian’s gotta do. But she picked the wrong woman."
