Midterm Election 2018: Democrats Win House!

Spread The Love

Sorry, Donald Trump.  The results of Midterm Election 2018 are in and your unchallenged free reign as the self-imposed King of America has come to an end.

Politics
In Tuesday’s Midterm Election 2018, Democrats won a major victory by handily regaining control of the US House of Representatives.

Midterm Election 2018

.

WINS

In a political system built on checks and balances, the United States government has operated of late with ZERO checks and ZERO balances.  Amidst the power of a Republican-led White House, Senate, and House, Donald Trump has grown accustomed to doing whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted.

Those days have now come to an end.

Midterm Election 2018
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Democrats won the Midterm Election 2018 with a 30+ gain in the US House of Representatives. Women, minority, and LGBT candidates played a huge role in the wins, which included a major victory by 29-year-old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York who is now the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. These Democratic gains will effectively return fairness and parity to American politics.

So, what does this mean going forward?

This means that Rep. Elijah Cummings will become the new Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight, Rep. Adam Schiff will become the new Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, and Rep. Maxine Waters will become the new Chairwoman of the House Financial Committee.  Or, in other words, Donald Trump now has official watchdogs in Congress.

Donald Trump can (and will likely) now be subpoenaed to testify regarding possible Russian collusion and other treasonous acts.  Donald Trump will (almost certainly) have to release his tax returns and reveal his foreign business dealings.  His Republican yes-men in Congress can no longer protect him.

Beginning with the new session of Congress, Democrats will have a myriad of tools at their disposal.  Democrats will not hesitate to do what Republicans were too afraid to do and not allow Trump to bully them.  Democrats will be able to renew a congressional probe into Trump’s emoluments clause violation and conduct their own investigation alongside the Robert Mueller inquiry.

Rep. Maxine Waters, Rep. Elijah Cummings

Additionally, Democrats could introduce articles of impeachment should they find reason to do so.

These decisions will be left up to the new Speaker of the House, who will replace Paul Ryan.  Democrats must now decide if they wish to return Nancy Pelosi to the Speaker’s Chair or elect some other colleague.  Stay tuned…

LOSSES & MORE

While winning control of the House of Representatives, Democrats were unable to regain control of the US Senate.  They were also unable to secure wins in several prominent races followed nationally.

Democratic progressive Beto’ O’Rourke was defeated by Ted Cruz in the Texas Senate race.  Additionally,  Andrew Gillum came up short in becoming the first African-American Governor of Florida.  However, the Florida senate race between Democratic incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson and former GOP Gov. Rick Scott is so razor thin that Florida law will require an automatic recount.

Stacey Abrams, Andrew Gillum

As for Stacey Abrams and her quest to become the first African-American (and female) governor of Georgia, the race remains too close to call at this writing and she has refused to concede.  Voting indiscretions and the razor-thin margin could see the Georgia race contested in the courts and/or sent to a runoff.

Aside from the Abrams race, Democrats were able to pick up other governorships.

Democrat J.B. Pritzker easily defeated Gov. Bruce Rauner in Illinois.  Democrat Gretchen Whitmer was victorious in the race to replace the term-limited GOP Gov. Rick Snyder in Michigan.  Additionally, Democrat Tony Evers trounced incumbent Gov. Scott Walker in Wisconsin, while Gavin Newsom cruised to an easy victory Tuesday night over John Cox in California.

Although Republicans will continue to control The White House and the US Senate, Democrats now command the US House and multiple State Houses — which is ultimately bad news for “The Donald.”

Thankfully, Midterm Election 2018 has ushered in a new day in America and returned a balance to US politics. How Trump and his Republican cronies will play their hands against Pelosi, Cummings, Waters, and other Democratic leaders will be interesting to watch.

Okay so a few thoughts on the results…. First: I’m a bit disappointed that Gillum didn’t win. Of the two historical governor races, I felt Gillum had a better chance of winning his race than Abrams. She may still get enough votes to trigger a runoff (votes are still being counted in Dem-leaning counties) but it’s gonna be an uphill battle. We shall see. Second: I’m very much interested in seeing the numbers (how many people actually voted and the demographic breakdowns). Third: I’m not so sure that Trump’s “unchallenged free reign as the self-imposed King of America has come to an end.” Yes, the Dems gained enough seats to take control of the House of Congress. Just enough seats. When you consider all that was at stake this year think I have to agree with the sentiment: “Democrats won the House, but Trump won the election” “While Tuesday night… Read more »

I disagree Trump won the election. The Dems won some power last night they did not have since Trump has been in. Dems also got a lot of governor races last night that nobody was expecting. I know Trump is going to spin it like he won big but I don’t see it that way. He is still facing the Muller investigation plus Dems can be a thorn in his side in congress.

Truthiz1

Yes BD, the “Dems can be a thorn in his side in congress.” But the Dems had better also do More than that -IF they have any prayer of retaking the White House in 2020. Right now that’s a big “IF.”

Dems will have to govern as effectively as they can. And IMO they didn’t really do that even when Pres. Obama was in office. The Dems are not really Unified. I don’t see it.

But I do agree with you on the Mueller investigation. That is still hanging over Trump’s head and we don’t know what the outcome of that will reveal.

“A 4 a.m. dispatch: Why Abrams refused to concede”

Her campaign argued that only a portion of the mail-in ballots in three metro Atlanta counties – Cobb, DeKalb and Gwinnett – had yet to be counted. And four other large Democratic-leaning counties – Athens-Clarke, Chatham, Douglas and Henry – hadn’t tallied any mail-in ballots by 4 a.m.

In all, those seven counties are expected to return at least 77,000 mail-in ballots, the Abrams campaign said.

Another 20,000 or so absentee ballots are set to be counted in Gwinnett County, as are a range of provisional and paper ballots, some cast because of technical issues at polling precincts. [….] Greg Bluestein, writer at MyAJC- Atlanta Journal Constitution

Congrats to these ladies!

“First Native American women elected to Congress: Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland”

Democrats Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland will become the first Native American women elected to Congress, CNN has projected.

In New Mexico, Haaland will replace Democratic Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham, who vacated the seat to run for governor, and Davids will unseat Kansas GOP Rep. Kevin Yoder.

Davids is a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation and Haaland is an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Laguna, according to their respective campaigns.

The projected victories for the two Native American women mark a milestone in the US political system.

Davids identifies as a lesbian, making her the first openly LGBT member of Congress from Kansas. She will enter Congress as a lawyer and a former mixed martial arts fighter. […] -CNN

Mr.BD

I was said about Gillum and Abrams not winning but I just heard on the news that Gillum could still have a chance because it was less than .5 points he lost. They have to do a recount or a run off or something in Florida now. Even if it doesn’t work out the Dems still got a lot of governor races. The senate was going to be hard anyway no matter how you look at it.

“A Good Night for Senate Republicans, A Bad Night for Trumpism” The president’s instincts prevailed, but what has he done for the rest of his party? Excerpt: Trump demonstrated once again Tuesday night that when it comes to serving up red meat to the red states, he is an unparalleled talent who knows how to counterpunch. Yes, the House with all its investigative and impeachment powers has fallen into the hands of his most determined foes as Democrats rode a wave of suburban anti-Trump revulsion. But in an unlikely pairing with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, he helped recruit several successful Senate candidates and ushered them across the finish line. Like the old joke about talented but turnover-prone quarterbacks, Trump keeps both teams in the game. He turned out both the Democratic and the Republican bases, winning at home even if not compiling the best record away. He cost his… Read more »

“The president’s instincts prevailed…”

Yep- xenophobia and racism resonates with the Republican base. Why pretend it’s anything else? […]

TAC Reader:
Trump is what he has always been, a shameless, self-promoting hack. He’s a good pet to have if you are an oligarch. while the “blue wave’ in the House of Representatives is not benign, the real power (impeachment, legislation) lies in the Senate, which is not based on “popular vote” (each State has two Senators, regardless of population. All this being said, one would hope the election will produce a more collaborative approach in DC. for example, as an American, I would like to see the Democrat controlled House “repeal and replace” the ACA with a better system, secure the borders and address immigration (sans wall), and bring the troops home. if, after these “win-win” accomplishments, we can talk impeachment. One thing a lot of people are forgetting is how important those governor wins were. District lines are drawn up on the state level. Those New Democratic governors can help eliminate the gerrymandering that’s been going on with Republicans.
