MITCH DANIELS: ‘No Thanks!’

Spread The Love

The GOP has come to a harsh and not-so-secret conclusion: Mitt, Newt and Rick just aren’t cutting it. Oh, say it ain’t so!

Republicans realize their chances of beating President Obama in the fall are dwindling by the day. So party insiders have been grasping at straws, hoping to find a suitable alternative they can throw in at the 11th hour to save the day.

One such Republican is Indiana’s Gov. Mitch Daniels, a known operative within the ranks of his party, but not necessarily a name that excites Independents and Reagan Democrats to cross the line. Still, desperate times call for desperate measures.

Republicans have been hoping against hope that Daniels might be willing to don the Superman cape and save the party from itself. But Daniels’ response to those party pleas: Thanks, but no thanks (again)!

According to The Indianapolis Star, Daniels said yesterday he is “aware of the noise” asking him to reconsider the race, especially with recent party fears of either a brokered Republican convention or at least one where the presidential race could go beyond one ballot. But he is not deterred and remains steadfast in his original decision.

“I never wanted to run, never planned to run,” Daniels said. Oh well, Republicans — back to the drawing board.

And speaking of a sinking ship….HuffPost: "Mitt Romney Fundraising Stagnates, Decreasing His Financial Advantage" WASHINGTON — As he remains stuck in a four-way race for the Republican presidential nomination, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's financial advantage is beginning to erode. His campaign raised only $6.4 million in the month of January, one of his worst fundraising months of his entire 2012 campaign. By comparison, in January 2008, during Romney's first unsuccessful presidential bid, he raised $9.6 million.Romney may have a bigger problem on his hands than disappointing fundraising totals. His campaign burned through $18.7 million in January, only to win primaries in New Hampshire and Florida. Romney's losing streak continued into February, as he weathered three losses to the surging Rick Santorum, a former senator from Pennsylvania, in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri.Romney's fundraising and burn rate should both be causes for concern for his campaign. Limbaugh on his radio show yesterday (2-20-12): "Both Establishments in Santorum Panic""Here you have the Republican establishment which, by virtue of this admission, that if Romney loses Michigan they think he’s gonna lose the nomination. And that means it’s time to ditch everybody and go find somebody else. That is a tantamount admission that they don’t care what their own voters are saying in all of these primaries, in all of these elections. We are seeing the Republican establishment force a candidate down the throats of the Republican base. The Republican base is obviously saying from primary to primary to primary they’re not really sure, really not all that sold on, Romney. And so the establishment, “Oh, well, okay, well, we gotta find somebody else you don’t like that might be able to win it,” which is what it boils down to. Michael Tomasky: "There Will Be No Saviors for the GOP in 2012" Prominent Republicans keep hoping for someone to rescue them from its slate of mediocre candidates. But the party’s biggest problem is the ideological bloodlust of its base. The bombshell dropped in Saturday’s Playbook, the chattering-class email sent out every morning by the Politico’s Mike Allen. If Mitt Romney fails to win Michigan next Tuesday, a few high-powered Republicans have started saying, the party needs to go back to square one and recruit a new candidate. Yes, maybe it does. But what will that fix? Not much. What the party needs is not simply a new candidate. It needs someone with the courage to stand up and say that the GOP has gone completely off the deep end—and that the party could run an amalgam of Ronald Reagan and Mahatma Gandhi and he wouldn’t win as long as the party’s inflamed base… Read more »
