MITT ROMNEY IS A MORMON!

Spread The Love

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has finally regained the top spot in the race for the GOP nomination — and just in time for his detractors to pull out their silver bullet:  HE’S A MORMON!

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Last week at the Value Voters Summit, Dallas pastor Robert Jeffress finally used his ace in the hole and called Romney’s Mormon faith “a cult,” saying that only a true Christian should receive the Republican nomination. This came after Jeffress endorsed Texas Gov. Rick Perry at the gathering and just prior to Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association, saying that Romney’s faith was “outside the mainstream of historic Christian orthodoxy.”  Check please!

Rev. Robert Jeffress

Romney hopes to become the first member of the Church of Latter Day Saints to win the presidency. But there is a powerful Christian evangelical wing of the Republican party that is armed and ready with the threat:  OVER MY DEAD BODY!!  Hasn’t Romney paid attention to his own party’s attempts to draft Gov. Chris Christie, Sarah Palin, or whoever they could find in a not-so-subtle “Anybody But Romney” campaign??

In response to the comments by Jeffress and Fischer, Romney told a largely lukewarm audience over the weekend that the speakers at the conference had “crossed the line,” adding: “Poisonous language doesn’t advance our cause. It never softened a single heart nor changed a single mind. The task before us is to focus on the conservative beliefs and the values that unite us.  Let no agenda narrow our vision or drive us apart.”  (Good luck with that!).

Bryan Fischer

But Fischer was not ready to back down and was prepared for Romney’s response. “I think it was unpresidential, tasteless and insensitive to the folks that are here,” Fischer told reporters. “I don’t think Romney helped himself saying that.”

Former GOP Secretary of Education and conservative talk show host William Bennett tried to play peacemaker and find unity in the wake of Jeffress’ and Fischer’s incendiary comments. “Do not give voice to bigotry,” Bennett urged the conservative audience.  And in direct response to Rev. Jeffress, Bennett said that he had “stepped on and obscured the words of Perry and (former Sen. Rick) Santorum and (businessman Herman) Cain and (Rep. Michele) Bachmann and everyone else who has spoken here.”  Bennett added “You did Rick Perry no good, sir, in what you had to say.”

So the Republican presidential race is underway — and so is a brewing Republican civil war.  But who will win in the end?  Could the victor actually end up being a 2nd term President Barack Obama?

You're right DJ. Mitt won't be getting the Talibangelicals vote. Not the majoirty of them anyway.Which brings me to the good Rev's caveat: Indeed, Rev. Jeffress REPEATEDLY stated his belief that Mormonism is a "cult" _and that "ONLY a TRUE Christian should receive the Republican nomination." But he also then added: EXCEPT if that Christian"s name happens to be BARACK OBAMA. Then the good Rev will most certainly be voting FOR MITT. Now ain't THAT a blip!?!He said it. And said it with a big ole *SMILE* on his face. With NOT even the slightest awarenes and/or concern that he'd just revealed his TRUE self (and his "faith" for that matter) to ALL of America. Nay, the WORLD.Look: If the election of the first Black President in American history has taught me anything it's that there is undoubtedly NO shortage of racists, bigots and various other forms of *Haters* in America. But I find it particularly amusing_AND ironic_watching this Very PUBLIC fight between TWO of the biggest Theological-politcial PARTNERS IN CRIME well known for their collaborative efforts to spread all manner HATE, FEAR and prejudices against the "OTHERS", be they Blacks, Gays, Jews, Muslims, ect.   Christianists and Mormons…SMH. They deserve… Read more »

Frumforum Commenter:The GOP political machine so far has left the defense (of Romney) to Huntsman, another Mormon, while Rick Perry says in public that Jeffress “hit it out of the park”- and continues to be a candidate. Where are the political party leaders on this? Quiet as mice. Where is the outrage from the base? Nonexistent. This isn’t the first time Jeffress has spewed his anti-Mormon views, not even the first time at the Values Summit at Romney’s expense. That the GOP keeps inviting Jeffress to the table is the clearest indication of (at least) their tacit approval of his message. […]The GOP leadership has actively courted far-right Christianist factions For.Their.Votes. going back to Goldwater's time. I've read about how Goldwater tried to warn his party of the dangers of dealing with religious extremists_and to certainly NOT allow them to play any prominent role within the party. The GOP ignored his warning and, later, that of Lee Atwater who (fighting a… Read more »

Wed. Oct 12, 2011.On a somewhat related note: Another GOP debate was held last night at Darmouth College. It was carried on Bloomberg TV. And you could follow live-chats of the debate on a number of websites.I honestly could NOT sit through another GOP debate…so I opted to LISTEN to a little of it on my TV (that was on in the living-room) while I followed 2 live-chat discussions in my computer room. This morning, Roger Simon @Politico sums it up Best, IMO: […] The Republican race has turned into “The Wizard of Oz.” Rick Perry wants a brain. Mitt Romney wants a heart. And any number of candidates are Dorothy, realizing there is no place like home and they should have stayed there.Herman Cain is seeking courage. He needs the courage to face the fact he is never going to be the Republican nominee, no matter how well he does in the polls. They all march down the yellow brick road that leads not from rally to… Read more »
