NY APPROVES MOSQUE AT GROUND ZERO

Spread The Love

UPDATE:  On Tuesday, NYC approved plans to build an Islamic Mosque/Cultural Center only steps from Ground Zero.  The current site, which has been used by Muslim groups for years, was originally thought to be an historic landmark.  But officials gave permission to demolish that building in order to erect a more modern and taller structure.

The Cordoba House is an Islamic community center operating right at the footsteps of Ground Zero in New York City.  The Cordoba House wants to build a mosque and 13-story community center on the site (called Park51) to host not only religious services, but also educational classes, exercise programs, and a swimming pool. But not everyone is thrilled with Cordoba’s plans, with an incredible firestorm of criticism growing among the community, Muslim leaders and 9/11 families.

Critics say building a mosque less than 600 feet from where the World Trade Center once stood, would be a terrible slap in the face to the memory of all those who died in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack, which was conducted by Islamic extremists.  They say that Muslims traditionally build a religious structure (such as a mosque) directly on or near the location where they’ve been successful in an attack, as a tribute to the Muslim martyrs who died in battle.

But supporters say the mosque is a gesture to bridge the gap between Muslims and the community, particularly since many Americans are still very skeptical about all Muslims.  Cordoba House representatives add that they are not the ones who were responsible for the 9/11 terrorism and that Muslim’s also died in the attack that day too. They also say that the location has already been used as a place of prayer for many years, so building a better and more modern facility for the same purposes should not be considered a bad thing.

Who’s right?

Was 9/11 carried out by Islamic terrorists? Yes. But by all accounts, the people behind Cordoba House have “NO connection” to terrorism AT ALL. And yet, they must bear the burden of being perceived as such by virtue of their religious association_I don't get it???What if the 9/11 terrorists had been radical Christians? Would a “Christian” group desiring to build a Church and community center near Ground Zero face such scorn and public outcry? Would Ground Zero be deemed too “sacred” for such a thing? The answer is _NO. What if the 9/11 terrorists had been radical Jews? Would Ground Zero be too “sacred” for a Synagogue and community Center? Again, the answer is _NO. But the evil actions of a few radical Muslim terrorists are an indictment of ALL Muslims??? Like I said, I don’t get it? Oh wait, yes I do… And as a “Christian,” I have to… Read more »

I'm not a racist, so I have nothing against the muslims. But why won't these people move their structure a few blocks as a goodwill gesture? The memories of September 11 are still too fresh for this sort of foolishness. This idea is causing a great deal of unneeded emotional stress. Moving their mosque to some other location would be better for all involved in my opinion.

Ok no disrespect Beth. But you say your not racist, yet you call them "the muslims" and "these people".See thats part of the problem. There's a lot of fear and anger involved in the issue thats clouding peoples thinking. Where exactly should the Cordoba center be built? Would three blocks away be enough, or ten, or a hundred. How far away does the center have to go before people stop feeling threatrened? The Cordoba center has been existing in this same location for a while now without a problem. It has always been a place for prayer and cultural events. So how it becomes something dangerous all of a sudden just because they want to modernize the facility is crazy. Truthiz said it best. MUSLIMS are American too!

Ok people. Here are the facts.1. The Emam who wants to build the Cordoba House refuses to say where he came up with the funds to build it. And you say he has no connections to terrorism. If he didn't, then why wouldn't he disclose that kind of information? People are well within their right to ask when 3,000 people died because of well funded muslim extremists. 2. Generally, regardless of religious or cultural association, any time there has been mass death in an area, that area is considered to be sacred. You cannot build ANYTHING on it. Consider the nunnery that was going to be built at Auschwitz. The Pope canceled its construction because the jewish people there wanted to keep that ground sacred even though the nunnery would have been there for community service. The ground around the Twin Towers is sacred, and nothing should be built there,… Read more »

@Anon- I'd like to address your points: #1: “The Emam who wants to build the Cordoba House refuses to say where he came up with the funds to build it. And you say he has no connections to terrorism."As a regular poster here, I've said that “BY ALL ACCOUNTS” (meaning people “in the know”) Cordoba House has “no connection” to terrorism. And quite frankly unless opponents can provide FACTUAL proof showing otherwise, then there is “No” connection. Also: You implied that the Emam’s "refusal" to say where he got the project funds points to a “terrorist” connection. No it doesn’t. And opponents wouldn’t dare hold any Christian OR Jewish group to that same standard of “proof.” The Emam could be withholding the names of his donors for a number of reasons and I’m confident that Mayor Bloomberg is NOT going let himself be PLAYED by the Emam or anyone else… Read more »

Ok all good points. But I'm officially confused now.Part of me thinks this is AMERICA and our fellow citizens should be able to build onto their property if they want. It shouldn't matter they;re muslim. But another part of me thinks this whole thing is so emotional, that center won't have a moments peace and the building is doing more dividing than uniting. So it comes down to if the muslim group should go build somewhere else and save everybodys emotions and anger? Or should they follow their right as Americans and build in their best interest? Can'd decide

Apparently the ADL has Changed its position on this issue and NOW supports it.US News: ADL 'Won't Fight' Park51 Community CenterWed, Aug 4, 2010 at 11:18:45 am PDTThe Anti-Defamation League’s Abe Foxman now says the ADL won’t fight the Park51 project. The Anti-Defamation League will not fight the building of a controversial Islamic center and mosque planned near the site of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks in New York, the group’s leader told CNN Wednesday. The Jewish organization sparked debate last week by opposing what’s come to be known as the “ground zero mosque” on the grounds that the controversy over it was “counterproductive to the healing process.”But following a ruling Tuesday that clears the way for the mosque to be built, “we’re not continuing to fight it. We raised an issue_but once the community board ruled, we move on,” Abraham Foxman told CNN’s “American Morning.” […]Read: Jewish group won't fight… Read more »

My apology to any Muslim site-visitors who may read my posts!I now know that the word is "Imam." NOT "Emam." I should have checked the correct spelling BEFORE posting it.
