MTG vs Mike Johnson: The Battle Of The GOP
Have you heard about the battle of MTG vs Mike Johnson in DC? It’s shaping up to be quite a doozy.
Politics :
In case you’re unaware, Republicans in Congress have been at odds with each other for several years now. Their infighting came to a head when former GOP Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy was kicked to the curb and removed as speaker without anyone ready (or even willing) to take his place. The fights continued for 3 weeks while Republicans embarrassingly failed to agree on a viable replacement. It went on when McCarthy quit Congress altogether and set out for revenge against the architects who ousted him.
Now, it’s reared its ugly head yet again with the battle of MTG vs Mike Johnson.
After an exhausting revolving door of GOP leadership, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (AKA “MTG”) has gone public with the news that she is out to get current GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson and wants him removed. Yesterday!
Greene is boiling mad that Speaker Johnson hasn’t aggressively advanced the Trump/MAGA agenda and that he has dared to compromise with Democrats in order to get things done.
Greene is also seemingly unaware of how Congress and democracy work — and that because Republicans only hold an impossibly slim 1-vote majority, nothing will pass without mutual agreement among both parties.
MTG came to Congress assuming she could force a square peg into a round hole, that it would be the “MAGA way” or the highway, and that she could get everything she wanted by always saying no and simply shutting government down unless she got her way. Interestingly, many Republicans assumed that was a doable game plan as well.
Too bad it was not.
Late last week, the MTG vs Mike Johnson battle kicked into high gear after Greene found the 3rd GOP congressman she needed to force a vote to oust Johnson.
According to NBC News, Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona and Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky have now joined Greene in a bid to kick Johnson out and seek a 3rd House Speaker in less than a year. If Democrats vote in favor of the motion, Speaker Johnson will find himself out of the speaker’s chair after only 6 months on the job!
“Johnson is done,” an unnamed House Republican who supports the current speaker told NBC News. “It’s sad.”
So, why does the MTG vs Mike Johnson battle exist?
It seems Greene is angry that Speaker Johnson approved of President Biden’s plan to provide additional aid to Ukraine as it fights against being swallowed up by Russia. And of course, anything that Mr. Biden supports, MAGA Republicans must oppose.
Originally, Johnson was also against giving more money to the Ukraine war. However, in a report from The New York Times, Johnson admitted that a highly classified intelligence briefing (provided to him as speaker) completely changed his mind and convinced him that it was the right thing to do.
“History judges us for what we do,” the speaker told reporters last week at the Capitol. “This is a critical time right now. I could make a selfish decision and do something that’s different. But I’m doing here what I believe to be the right thing. I think providing lethal aid to Ukraine right now is critically important.”
However, Marjorie Taylor Greene believes it’s critically important to oppose everything that the Democrats support — and she’s willing to tear Congress down and further embarrass her own party by replacing yet another House Speaker just to prove a point.
If the MTG vs Mike Johnson battle has proven one valid point, it’s that Republicans will never learn.

Repubs must really want Hakeem Jeffries to be speaker. Because that is what will happen if they cannot get their act together.
