NAACP TO STOP VOTING TRICKS

Spread The Love

Recently, OK WASSUP! posted a story regarding racist voting tricks and new state voting laws, which conservatives hope to use to sway the upcoming 2012 election in their favor.  Now the NAACP is stepping in!

The NAACP and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund each launched a campaign yesterday against new state laws that tightened voter qualifications. The 2 organizations will release a report that the laws tend to suppress minority voting, which grew enormously after an unprecedented minority turnout for Barack Obama in the 2008 election.

The groups say they will send the document to congressional leaders, state attorneys general, secretaries of state and the Department of Justice, hoping to roll back laws which require government-issued identification at the polls, a reduced number of early-voting days and other measures they believe could disenfranchise as many as 5 million voters.

The NAACP will lead a march to the United Nations headquarters in New York this Saturday to draw attention to the issue.  They are hoping to prevent a voting nightmare similar to the 2000 election between Al Gore and George W. Bush, where thousands of African-American voters were purposely sent to wrong polling sites, or totally turned away and not permitted to vote at all. Voting tricks from that year helped win George W. Bush the presidency.  The NAACP intends to prevent similar tricks from creating a similar outcome against President Barack Obama.
