In an effort to avoid providing further fame to the shooter and to prevent sensationalizing a national tragedy, we will not show the video on this site. Nor will we name the now-deceased shooter. Not now. Not ever. However, we would like to honor the 3 children and 3 adults who were senselessly killed earlier this week.
On Monday, a female shooter (who was a former student) entered the Covenant Christian School in Nashville and began shooting. Police were immediately called to the scene and used similar assault-style weapons as the shooter to take her down. She was killed on the spot.
However, more importantly, 6 innocent human lives were taken that day during the deadly Nashville school shooting:
Mike Hill, 61
Mike Hill was a custodian at the school as well as a member of the facilities/kitchen staff.
Katherine Koonce, 60
Katherine Koonce was head of the Covenant School. She attended Vanderbilt University and Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville and got her master’s degree from Georgia State University.
Cynthia Peak, 61
Cynthia Peak was a substitute teacher working at the school on the day of the attack. She grew up in Louisiana and is survived by her husband, daughter, and two sons.
Hallie Scruggs, 9
Hallie Scruggs was the daughter of Covenant Presbyterian Church Lead Pastor Chad Scruggs, according to a statement by Dallas’ Park Cities Presbyterian Church, a sister church Scruggs formerly served.
“We love the Scruggs family and mourn with them over their precious daughter Hallie,” Senior Pastor Mark Davis said. “Together, we trust in the power of Christ to draw near and give us the comfort and hope we desperately need.”
Evelyn Dieckhaus, 9
Evelyn Dieckhaus was a bright, young student who was only in the third grade.
William Kinney, 9
Friends of the family of William Kinney described the 3rd grader as a child with an “unflappable spirit”.
“He was unfailingly kind, gentle when the situation called for it, quick to laugh, and always inclusive of others,” she wrote in his honor. “Sweet Will knew no strangers, and our hearts our broken for his family as they try to find their way forward.”
The school issued a statement on Tuesday regarding the Nashville school shooting:
“Our community is heartbroken,” the Covenant School said in a statement. “We are grieving tremendous loss and are in shock coming out of the terror that shattered our school and church. We are focused on loving our students, our families, our faculty, and staff and beginning the process of healing. …
“We appreciate the outpouring of support we have received, and we are tremendously grateful to the first responders who acted quickly to protect our students, faculty, and staff. We ask for privacy as our community grapples with this terrible tragedy – for our students, parents, faculty, and staff.”
