‘Nemo’ Wallops East Coast
The U.S. east coast spent the weekend “fighting Nemo,” after a winter storm of the same name left Boston, New York and Connecticut buried under snow of record proportions.
Waist deep snow left Boston residents digging themselves out, while emergency crews were forced to use snowmobiles to reach stranded motorists on New York’s Long Island, some of whom were forced to spend the night inside a local Walmart.
About 475,000 homes and businesses are still without power, which is down from an original estimate of 650,000. Roads between New York and Boston still remain impassable and President Obama has declared a state of emergency in Connecticut.
At least 8 deaths were related to the storm, including a 14-year-old Boston boy who died inside the family car from carbon monoxide poisoning, as his father tried to dig the vehicle out of snow. Apparently, the father was unaware the exhaust pipe was clogged with snow, which filled the vehicle with the deadly poison and killed the boy.
