New York Stock Exchange Bomb Threat Foiled

Authorities successfully thwarted a plot to blow up the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday.

Despite a Republican sweep of the November election, at least one man still wasn’t happy with the shape of the government and believed it needed immediate fixing by him.

According to The Hill, Harun Abdul-Malik Yener, a South Florida resident, devised a plot to bomb the New York Stock Exchange in a plan he said would “reset” the US government. The FBI heard about the plot back in February after getting a tip that he was storing bomb materials in an unlocked storage facility in Coral Springs, FL. After obtaining a search warrant, FBI agents found “bombmaking sketches, multiple watches with timers, electronic circuit boards and other electronics” that could be utilized to make an explosive. 

Yener has since been caught and charged with attempting to use an improvised explosive device to damage or destroy a “building used in interstate or foreign commerce.”

The scheme to bomb the New York Stock Exchange came after Yener told law enforcement officials back in March that he tried to join a “domestic extremist group” and had experience with making “rockets” and “bombs.” He also told agents that he considered joining ISIS and fighting for them in 2015 in Iraq but decided not to because he thought that ISIS would not end up achieving “their objectives.”

That’s when he told an undercover agent that the financial center would be his target on Nov. 18th because he wanted to “attain a ‘reboot’ and/or ‘reset’ of the United States government.” 

Yener intended to wear a disguise and record a message for the news media, saying he planned for the explosion to be “like a small nuke went off” and that “[a]nything outside” the building “will be wiped out” and “anything inside there would be killed.”

Why he believed the US government needed a “reset” remained a mystery.
