Newark Mayor Cory Booker easily won yesterday’s special election to replace the late Senator Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey, making him the most prominent African-American and Democratic politician in Washington besides President Obama.
Senator-Elect Booker won with 55% of the vote, compared to 44% won by Steve Lonegan, his Republican challenger, former mayor of Bogota, NJ and state director of the conservative group Americans for Prosperity.

Booker was a major fundraiser, using his millions of Twitter followers to bolster his campaign. His reputation as somewhat of a hero — rescuing a neighbor from a burning building, shoveling out snowbound cars and living on a food stamp diet — also helped propel him to the top.
Cory Booker will arrive in DC with the winds of popularity behind his back. With his star shining so brightly, he is already being mentioned as a possible Vice-Presidential candidate (with Hillary?) in 2016.
