Nunes Memo Is Trump’s ‘Trump Card?’

Spread The Love

As the case of collusion and obstruction of justice appears to be heating up against Donald Trump, “The Donald” is bragging that he is holding a “Trump Card” (pun intended) that will prove his innocence: the Nunes Memo.  Will this be the “Get Out Of Jail Free” pass that saves his ass?  Don’t bet on it!

Politics
In case you’re unaware, the Nunes Memo is a series of notes scribed by Republican Congressman and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes during the congressional investigation into Trump’s alleged collusion with Russia (NOTE: The congressional investigation is separate from the Robert Mueller investigation). The memo alleges that the FBI “may have relied on politically motivated or questionable sources” to obtain a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrant in the early phases of their investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

As chairman of the House committee, Nunes has held control of the secret notes. However, as a Republican with a history of attempting to assist Trump in covering his tracks, the congressman is being accused of tainting the House investigation by doctoring the contents of the Nunes Memo to Donald Trump’s advantage.

Reps. Adam Schiff and Devin Nunes

Rep. Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, announced on Wednesday that Nunes delivered to Trump a “secretly altered” version of the Republican-crafted memo which claims the US Justice Department abused their surveillance powers regarding Trump.  According to Schiff, the expression of alleged abuse was never approved by the full committee to be recorded in the confidential memo (as protocol dictates), and should never have appeared in the Nunes Memo presented to Donald Trump.

Since obtaining a copy of the (doctored to his advantage) memo, Trump has threatened to release it to the public on Friday in an attempt to sway the court of public opinion that the investigation is a partisan witch-hunt out to get him.

Nunes Memo“This evening the Committee Minority discovered that the classified memorandum shared by the Committee Majority with the White House is not, in fact, the same document that Members of the House of Representatives have been reviewing since January 18, 2018 and that the Committee Majority voted on Monday to release to the public, over objections from the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” the letter from Schiff read.

Schiff went on to say that Democrats found the document “had been secretly altered” and that “it is clear” Republicans “made material changes to the version it sent to the White House, which Committee Members were never apprised of, never had the opportunity to review and never approved.”

Hold your horses… that is only the beginning.

Politics
In an 11th-hour development, FBI Director Christopher Wray has since sided with Democrats that the Nunes Memo was indeed doctored and, if released in its current form, will grossly mislead the American public.

Nunes Memo
FBI Director Christopher Wray

“With regard to the House Intelligence Committee’s memorandum, the FBI was provided a limited opportunity to review this memo the day before the committee voted to release it,” Wray said in a rare public warning that the memo’s details regarding the FBI’s surveillance practices omits key information that could impact its veracity. “As expressed during our initial review, we have grave concerns about material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo’s accuracy.”

Hmmm…

Wray’s surprise statement has now set up an angry showdown between Donald Trump and the man he hand-selected to be former FBI Director James Comey’s replacement (and who he erroneously believed would do his bidding). Additionally, the combined claims by the House committee’s ranking Democrat and Trump’s own FBI pick that the Nunes Memo has been doctored by Republicans and is therefore invalid, will now force “The Donald” to change course.

Earlier this week, Trump boasted that the Nunes Memo would be released “pretty quick” and that “the whole world will see it.” Now, with the statements from Adam Schiff and Christopher Wray, he has been blasted back to the drawing board and reality. Or, in other words, Trump’s “Trump Card” has just been revoked.

Stay tuned…

Very good post DJ. Nicely detailed. Glad you jumped on this.

I have 1 or 2 thoughts on the *Nunes Memo* but first I’d like to quickly share this related story just as an FYI…….

“Trey Gowdy finally had it with Washington”

The influential chairman of the House Oversight Committee is sick of {partisan} politics and won’t seek reelection. – Politico

Trey Gowdy is, IMO, as loathsome as Devin Nunes. He can be just as partisan. But unlike Nunes, Gowdy isn’t a stupid man. Apparently he’s has had enough of this ginormous sh*tfest (aka the Trump presidency) and he’s heading for the EXITS!

My guess is, Trey arrived at the conclusion that things probably *AIN’T* gonna end well for Trump and the Republican party……so Yeah, he’s getting out now. Going home to the wife and kids.

I agree with DJ. The “Nunes Memo” won’t save “the Donald.” In fact, whatever little value Trump and his puppet-minions thought he would gain from the memo appears to be already melting away if not backfiring on Trump (and Nunes) altogether.

I’ve got more to say on this but I’m heading to a meeting now. I shall return.

Mr.BD

Here is the thing that always gets over looked. If Trump so innocent like he claims to be, why is he always doing everything he can to block justice? It should be obvious to everybody his actions are of a guilty person trying to hide something. He has Nunes doctoring the books for him. Then here he is fighting with the investigators and his brand new FBI chief. Why can’t people see what is going on here?

Truthiz1

“Why can’t people see what is going on here?”

BD, there’s no doubt in mind. By now most Americans indeed DO see what’s going on. But here’s the reality of what we’re dealing with. Trump voters and enablers don’t give a d*mn. His voters are motivated by one set of goals. His enablers are motivated by another set. And the primary goal uniting both groups?

Here’s a hint: It’s NOT the economy…and it never was. It’s White nativist nationalism.

Marcus

I think you make an excellent point. If 45 were innocent he would cooperate with justice, not block it. The fact he keeps looking for a scheme to get out from under the microscope speaks volumes. i can’t wait to see what Mueller presents once the investigation is complete and everything comes out in the open.

“Senator Urges Fellow Republicans to Heed Warnings on Releasing Secret Memo” Excerpt: WASHINGTON — Senator John Thune of South Dakota, the No. 3 Senate Republican, urged House Republicans on Thursday to slow their push to release a secret staff-written memo said to accuse the F.B.I. and Justice Department of abusing their authorities to obtain a warrant to spy on a former Trump campaign associate. Mr. Thune said he thought that the Senate Intelligence Committee and its Republican chairman, Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina, should be allowed to see the document before its release. He also said that House Republicans should carefully consider the F.B.I.’s warning that it had “grave concerns” about making the memo public. “They need to pay careful attention to what our folks who protect us have to say about what this, you know, how this bears on our national security,” Mr. Thune told reporters at the… Read more »

NYTimes Reader:
There is an issue here that is at the top of the list. In their craven willingness to degrade National Security it is clear that Republicans and the President value their own self-interest over the oath they gave to attain their position in the Congress, Senate and White House. That is of course to “protect and defend the Constitution of the United States” along with its citizenry for whom they stand as proxy. As an outside observer I fail to see how this cannot be considered TREASON. [….]

National Review Reader:
Oh, and speaking of interesting news, former Trump campaign employee Carter Page has been under investigation by the FBI for espionage since 2013…long before he worked for Trump. Trump’s campaign hired a f’ing SPY. […]

So I’m waiting to see if Trump actually follows thru with releasing the memo. Unless I’m mistaken Trump hasn’t yet given a definitive day and time for the release. And please, anyone, correct me if I’m wrong on this.

Trump and his Repub cohorts can’t play *chicken* with the memo much longer. THEY’ve pushed it to a fever pitch. Now is the time to put up…..and deal with the consequences. Or Shut.Up…..and deal with the consequences.

Breaking News CNN:
Top White House aides are worried FBI Director Christopher Wray could quit if the highly controversial Republican memo alleging the FBI abused its surveillance tools is released, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation tell CNN.

Wray has made clear he is frustrated that President Donald Trump picked him to lead the FBI after he fired FBI Director James Comey in May, yet his advice on the Nunes memo is being disregarded and cast as part of the purported partisan leadership of the FBI, according to a senior law enforcement official.
Wray’s stance is “raising hell,” one source familiar with the matter said.

Well surely little Donnie would have released that bogus memo already if only a *patsy* would’ve been willing to take the blame for the fallout if the release goes badly (LOOKING right at Nunes and Ryan).

So far the little guy has only given the “green-light” to House Repubs to release it ….while House Repubs seem to be waiting on HIM to take that leap.

Time is running out boyz.
