THE OBAMA JOBS SPEECH

Spread The Love

President Obama will take to the airwaves tonight before a joint session of congress to unveil his jobs plan. The much anticipated speech could not only help those Americans who are in dire need of employment and financial assistance, but if successful, it could go a long way in assuring the president a 2nd term.

Mr. Obama is expected to propose $300 billion to strengthen the economy and stimulate new job growth, although some sources say that figure was growing and could top $400 billion.

The plan will be paid for partly by closing corporate loopholes and raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans in the future, according to one Democratic source.  It will largely focus on infrastructure spending, targeted tax cuts and aid to state and local governments.  The president is also expected to extend unemployment benefits for those who have exhausted the 99-week maximum, yet are still without a job.

As a further sign of broken government in Washington, Mr. Obama’s speech tonight will not be without controversy, as several GOP congressman intend to boycott the speech by not attending.  Rep. Paul Broun of Georgia, says in lieu of attending the speech, he will comment on it via Twitter instead.

Excerpt: "Moment of Truth" This, after all, is a president who has ended the war in Iraq, killed Osama bin Laden, passed universal health insurance, rescued Detroit, stabilized an economy in free-fall, dispatched Qaddafi, deftly presided over a democratic transformation in the Middle East, and guided the political system toward a far more honest assessment of our fiscal crisis. He has quite a story to tell. He just needs the audacity to tell it.Well, tonight we'll see the first attempt. What ultimately forges a presidency is how it responds to the moment when it is getting pummeled. Good luck, Mr President. This time, you'll need it. [….]~ Andrew Sullivan

Reaction to the President's speech last night: In the words of Andrew Sullivan, Pres. Obama had to "step up to his moment of truth on jobs and (he did just that) he brought it__hard."And in the words of David Frum, the President's speech:…was excellent, clear, focused and unrhetorical. No, he has not restored the country to prosperity. But he does again at least look like he’s trying and like he’s defending Medicare and Social Security in the process. If Obama cannot run as the recovery and prosperity candidate, he will try to run as the stability and security candidate against opponents whom he will seek to depict as radical and reckless. Many of his opponents are enthusiastically cooperating with that strategy, including the current Republican presidential front-runner. […]Hmm…"The American Job Act." Well done, Mr. President! You are a Master at playing the Long game something the "problem children" (aka the Repubs) cannot remotely grasp. It appears the President is… Read more »

I was not impressed by the speech. It was the same warmed over rhetoric.

Paul Krugman: "Setting Their Hair on Fire"Excerpt:So, at this point, leading Republicans are basically against anything that might help the unemployed. Yes, Mr. Romney has issued a glossy, well-produced “jobs plan,” but it might best be described as 59 bullet points with nothing there — and certainly nothing to justify his assertion, bordering on megalomania, that he would create no fewer than 11 million jobs in four years. The good news in all this is that by going bigger and bolder than expected, Mr. Obama may finally have set the stage for a political debate about job creation. For, in the end, nothing will be done until the American people demand action.NYT: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/09/opinion/setting
