Quoting from the Quran for emphasis, and saying “This cycle of suspicion and discord must end,” President Obama delivered a memorable speech in Cairo on Thursday that is already being hailed as a great and successful step in healing the rift between Islam and Western culture.

Mr. Obama promised during his presidential campaign that he would deliver a major speech before Muslims in an Islamic country, and the President has now kept that promise amid mutual respect and fanfare. He covered everything from equal rights for women to the Islamic differences with Israel, and notably absent from his remarks was the word “Terrorist.” Mr. Obama was interrupted dozens of times by supportive shouts and applause, but in the end was greeted with a standing ovation, a clear sign that he was positively received. Muslim reaction was immediate and overwhelmingly positive: “There is a change between the speech of President Obama and previous speeches made by George Bush,” said Fawzi Barhoum, a Hamas spokesman in Gaza. In Iran, the cleric Mohammad Ali Abtahi called Mr. Obama’s speech “compensation to hostile environment which was created during President Bush.” WATCH:
