President Obama has had enough! As reported here earlier this week, the Sandy Hook shooting spree has made gun control a top priority for the president and for America.
Yesterday, Mr. Obama tapped Vice-President Joe Biden to spearhead a commission to fix our gun laws and remove assault type weapons from the hands of ordinary citizens.
Joe Biden is certainly the right man for the job. As a senator, Biden wrote the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act in 1988 and successfully ushered it through the Senate in 1994. Despite a Republican filibuster, Biden was successful by negotiating with Republicans and making bipartisan revisions.
Gun control is long overdue within this country. The National Rifle Association (NRA) has held America hostage for far too long, somehow fooling Americans into believing that guns are necessary and should be easy and readily available to own. But opponents have seized the Sandy Hook tragedy as an opportunity to point out that the U.S. requires certain restrictions and testing before an adult is allowed to operate a vehicle. They’ve also argued that U.S. drug stores operate a data base to monitor the sale and consumption of certain drugs. If these safeguards can be in place to prevent us from killing ourselves with cars and medicines, why can’t safeguards be in place to prevent more gun violence?
Interestingly, the NRA has been eerily silent.
That last picture says it all. We have to show a photo id just to buy some sudafed at the drug store but anybody can get a gun in minutes with no proof of anything. Anybody can see something is wrong with that. I can't wait to see how this all plays out and what changes get made.
