PAUL’S ‘PALIN’ MOMENT

Spread The Love

They’ll never admit it publicly, but with the selection of Paul Ryan as their VP nominee, the Republican Party hopes everyone forgets that Sarah Palin was once their pick.  Except, some recent “Palin-esque” moments by Ryan is sort of thwarting those hopes.

In a recent television interview on Fox News, host Brit Hume asked Ryan about the massive budget cuts he so staunchly backs and how soon the budget would be balanced in a Romney-Ryan administration.

Proving that he’s still quite the novice on the national stage, Ryan stumbled and stammered, before finally uttering that he did not know exactly, saying “I don’t want to get ‘wonky’ on you.” HUH??

Now this wasn’t a “Gotcha” question (as Sarah Palin would say), since it was done on Fox News, which is in the back pocket of the Republican Party. No! This was a very valid question and Ryan’s big moment in the spotlight to show the world that he knows his stuff.  This was a crucial opportunity to prove that he and Romney are not just running as an alternative to President Obama, but that they have a real and actual plan to fix the economy.  This was a chance to quiet his critics, lay down the law and let it be known that he IS indeed ready for prime time.  But what did Ryan do? He FAILED!

Ahem… um… excuse me Mr. Ryan, but if you can’t even explain when the massive budget cuts you propose will actually fix America by balancing our budget, then why should anyone vote for your ticket???

"This was a chance to quiet his critics, lay down the law and let it be known that he IS indeed ready for prime time. But what did Ryan do? He FAILED!"Yep. And quite miserably, I might add. But I mean really. Who, other than Repubs, is suprised at Ryan's performance thus far?IMO, it's obvious what the BIGGEST problems with the Republican party_and more specifically, Republican-brand *conservatism*, aka "Republicanism"_are. And it's been obvious for quite some time:  1. Most Repub consevatives have NOT the foggiest idea of what TRUE Conservatism is. 2. Most Repub so-called "wonks" or "intellectuals" or "brainiancs" who are considered to be "leaders" of that party are intellectual LIGHT-weights, at best and absolute morons at worst. Take away their 7th grade talking points, force them to have to actually THINK on their feet and EXPLAIN their own policies and you get what you got in the Brit Hume interview. Palin-esque blather and/OR Sununu et al simply going off the rails as if their off their meds or something! As I stated last week. BEFORE the Ryan VP pick the race… Read more »

Just an FYI related to point #2 in my initial response:NBC News: "Missouri Republican: 'Legitimate rape' rarely causes pregnancy"A Republican Senate nominee found himself in hot water on Sunday for suggesting that instances of "legitimate rape" rarely results in pregnancy. Rep. Todd Akin, a Republican who's locked in a hard-fought campaign in Missouri to unseat Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, was answering a question regarding his position on abortion rights in instances when a woman is a victim of rape. “First of all, from what I understand from doctors, [pregnancy from rape] is really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," Akin said. Read: http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/08/19/133…These people just aren't too bright!

Yes indeed. The Ryan pick really has made the race more interesting."Mitt Romney Distances Self From Todd Akin's Legitimate Rape' Comments"Excerpt: Ryan sponsored a fetal personhood bill, which would effectively criminalize abortion and some forms of birth control WITHOUT exceptions for rape victims.“I’m as pro-life as a person gets,” he told the Weekly Standard in 2010. “You’re not going to have a truce.”Ryan also cosponsored the <span>"No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act" with Akin in 2011</span>. The GOP tried to narrow the definition of rape as it related to abortions with the measure. Only in instances of "forcible rape," the bill specified, would a woman be eligible to have her abortion covered under insurance. […] Read: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/19/mitt-rom

NYTimes OP-ED: "An Unserious Man"Mitt Romney’s choice of Paul Ryan as his running mate led to a wave of pundit accolades. Now, declared writer after writer, we’re going to have a real debate about the nation’s fiscal future. This was predictable: never mind the Tea Party, Mr. Ryan’s true constituency is the commentariat, which years ago decided that he was the Honest, Serious Conservative, whose proposals deserve respect even if you don’t like him.But he isn’t and they don’t.Ryanomics is and always has been a con game, although to be fair, it has become even more of a con since Mr. Ryan joined the ticket.Let’s talk about what’s actually in the Ryan plan, and let’s distinguish in particular between actual, specific policy proposals and unsupported assertions. Well okay, since I'm at work with NOT much to do today_AND this little goodie landed in the Dems lap (and it's lighting up the socio-political blogs), I'll just run with it until DJ shuts me down 😉 !Frum: "Akin's Abortion View: More Widespread in GOP Than You Think"The word "moron" is being flung very freely at Todd Akin today, and it's not fair.Akin, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Missouri, just blew a big hole in his canpaign by telling a TV interviewer that in cases of "legitimate rape," pregnancy hardly ever happens. Akin was attempting to justify his view that abortion should be banned in nearly all cases. And yes, the use of the phrase "legitimate rape" suggests a certain lack of verbal nimbleness. Yet stupidity is not really the problem here.Akin's view of abortion—no exception for rape, incest, and life of the mother—is not his belief alone. It is also… Read more »

Politico: "Akin: A damage estimate"It’s barely been a day since Missouri GOP Congressman Todd Akin made his <span>incomprehensible remarks</span> regarding “legitimate rape” but the damage is already rippling across the political landscape. The national headlines are only part of the problem. The GOP Senate nominee has caused immeasurable damage because of the timing of his remarks as well. At a time when part of the Democratic message is that the GOP is conducting a “war on women,” Akin has provided Democrats with a limitless supply of ammunition for use against GOP candidates. The quick condemnations from Republicans across the nation signal the deep concern about the potential blowback. Here’s how Akin’s remarks are playing out at the moment. The presidential raceMitt Romney addressed the furor Monday, telling National Review Online,  that Akin’s comment was “inexcusable.”That’s one obvious measure of the extent of the damage: When a party’s presidential nominee feels a need to comment on a… Read more »
