We’ve seen the type way too many times before. They are the guys with the “ultra-macho” image, who seem to almost go out of their way to display their extreme heterosexual existence. Often times, these men tend to seek out trouble, tend to be the first to call someone a f*ggot, or tend to frequently find the need to prove their über-heterosexualism. Others attempt to hide their homophobia behind religious and spiritual excuses and their claim to “protect the family.” Now, there may be some scientific evidence to explain this behavior.

The idea of repressed or latent homosexuality explains the emotional and irrational attitudes displayed by some individuals who feel guilty about their erotic interests and struggle to deny and repress their homosexual impulses. Perhaps this might be why some straight men often overreact with panic or anger when they encounter a gay individual or things that feel homosexual in nature.

Some of the biggest homophobes in politics and religion are also some of the very men who have been caught participating in secret homosexual activities.

In 2006, anti-gay and pro family values pastor Ted Haggard was outed by prostitute and professional masseur, Mike Jones, who revealed Haggard had been paying him to engage in sex with him for 3 years.
Haggard had been a boisterous supporter of Colorado Amendment 43, which was designed to ban same-sex marriage in the state. He was also one of the most anti-gay “homophobes” on the religious circuit.
When his “gay-for-pay” partner finally outed him, Haggard stuck to his guns by claiming he was not a homosexual, but merely a “heterosexual with issues.”
In 2007, Sen. Larry Craig of Minnesota was arrested after soliciting sex from a man inside an airport bathroom. The staunch anti-gay Republican fervently denied being gay, even though police caught him red handed seeking gay sex inside the bathroom stall. Craig’s political career ended soon after.

Why are people so fearful of homosexuality? Despite advances in gay rights and acceptance, why does homophobia still exist? Are most homophobes really closet homosexuals? Tell us below.North Carolina Republican Senate candidate Steve Wiles built his entire political campaign on anti-gay conservative beliefs and his strong support of the state’s ban on same-sex marriage. However, in May of 2014, it was revealed that Wiles had a secret life performing as “Miss Mona Sinclair,” a gay drag queen and drag-show emcee at a Winston-Salem gay nightclub. He also worked as a promoter for the 2011 Miss Gay America pageant. Although Wiles initially tried to save face by shifting focus to his anti-gay political platform, his “Miss Mona Sinclair” alter-ego irreversibly ruined his conservative political aspirations.
