The world’s worst kept secret was finally and officially revealed Friday night:  Olympic Gold Medalist and Reality TV star Bruce Jenner is becoming a woman.

“For all intents and purposes, I’m a woman,” Jenner admitted to Diane Sawyer in an exclusive 2-hour interview on ABC’s 20/20.  “My brain is much more female than it is male.  It’s hard for people to understand that, but that’s what my soul is.”

Jenner opened up to the world via national television to detail his internal struggles with being transgender, which he says he has wrestled with since childhood.  In fact, it was during the late 1950s when Jenner was about 8 or 9 years old that he first put on a dress from his mother’s closet while she was out of the house.

“I marked the closet so when I put it back I could put it all back, everything back in the exact same spot so I wouldn’t get caught,” Jenner said. “And, at the time, I didn’t know why I was doing it besides it just made me feel good.”

Cross dressing also became a part of Jenner’s adult life, as he described trips on the road during his time as a motivational speaker, where the anonymity of a hotel room provided an ideal environment to express what he was feeling within.

“I’d literally go up into the hotel room, change [into women’s] clothes, and walk around,” Jenner said.

The choice to finally go public with the secret feeling he’s been carrying for more than 60 years was a difficult one for him, as well as for those who best remember him as the athletic jock who won the Olympic decathlon in 1976 but now wants to transition to female.

“People look at me differently,” Jenner said. “They see you as this macho male, but my heart and my soul and everything that I do in life — it is part of me.  That female side is part of me. That’s who I am.”

“I look at it this way—Bruce always telling a lie. He’s lived a lie his whole life about who he is. And I can’t do that any longer,” Jenner added.

As for those who are curious about his sexuality, Jenner made it clear he is not gay.  He says he intends to remain a heterosexual who is attracted to women, who also just happens to be a woman.

“As of now, I have all the male parts and all that kind of stuff, so in a lot of ways we’re different, okay?” Jenner told Sawyer during the interview. “But we still identify as female. And that’s very hard for Bruce Jenner to say. Because why? I don’t want to disappoint people.”
