In his final time at bat, the president calmly stepped up to the plate and, as expected, hit it one more time out of the park. Barack Obama proved at the 11th hour that he is one of the greatest orators of a generation and one of the most admired leaders of our time.
During his hour-long remarks, President Obama celebrated a laundry list of accomplishments during his 8 years in the Oval Office. The capture of Osama Bin Laden, Obamacare, Marriage Equality, were all at the top of the list to cheer about — but it was the people in his personal life who made President Obama most emotional.
The president thanked his staff, he thanked the scores of volunteers who knocked on doors to help him get elected twice, and he thanked his political partner, Joe Biden, whom he called “brother.” However, it was his gratitude to First Lady Michelle Obama that not only moved first daughter Malia Obama to tears but likely most of the country as well.
“Michelle LaVaughn Robinson, girl of the South Side, for the past 25 years you have not only been my wife and mother of my children, you’ve been my best friend,” the president said while wiping away a tear. “You took on a role you didn’t ask for, and you made it your own with grace and with grit and with style and with humor. You made The White House a place for everybody and a new generation sets its sights higher because it has you for a role model. You have made me proud and you have made the country proud.”
President Obama closed his remarks by challenging Americans to continue working toward change.
“I’m asking you to believe — not in my ability to bring about change, but in yours,” he said.
Mr. Obama then spent the next 30+ minutes shaking hands with many of the attendees in the crowd, before boarding Air Force One for the last time.

Truly, it breaks my heart to see him go – especially when you consider the um…fella who is to be the next President of this great nation. Regular readers of this site know that I was never one to shy away from criticizing the President whenever I felt he deserved it during his 8 years in office. But the truth is – for the many issues I felt he could have…and should have…handled very differently (more effectively) there are so many more issues I feel he handled correctly, if not brilliantly. His character…and that of his wife and children…is of the highest caliber. His temperament is 2nd to none. Though I wish he would have been willing to step up and "fight the good fight" when… Read more »
