Project 2025 is a secret GOP plan to completely dismantle the federal government and replace it with a conservative vision. Republicans now realize that Donald Trump was previously unable to implement his dictatorial agenda on America due to the existing checks and balances of democracy built into the US Constitution. They also recognize that they may not always be in control of the executive and legislative branches of government (and, to some degree, the judicial branch of the US Supreme Court), so they must cheat the rules now in order to tilt control of the country to their advantage.
According to The Associated Press, Project 2025 is a 1,000-page far-right manifesto detailing plans to fundamentally transform the American government and end the current system of democracy as we know it. The plan was designed by the conservative think tank Heritage Foundation, as well as various former Trump administration officials who have established a government-in-waiting for an expected Donald Trump return.
Under Project 2025 (named for its plan to begin implementation in 2025), Donald Trump would be handed the opportunity to operate as president under a brand new system designed around a far-right agenda.
For example, a major part of the plan includes reinstating the Trump-era executive order Schedule F, which would strip tens of thousands of federal workers of civil protections and make it easier for them to be fired and replaced with Trump loyalists eager to do his bidding. Other parts of the manifesto include eliminating the Department of Education; limiting federal education policies; national book bans; stripping federal protections from the LGBTQ+ community; undoing Title VII (which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin) and Title IX of the Civil Rights Act (prohibiting sex-based discrimination in any school or education program that receives funding from the federal government); enacting a nationwide total ban on abortion; and even potentially banning words such as “diversity,” “gender,” and “abortion” from the government, schools, and all existing pieces of legislation.
Agenda 47 (named for Trump potentially becoming the 47th President of the United States), shares many of the same objectives as Project 2025, but also includes plans to elevate the president’s power, enforce the death penalty for drug dealers, provide the power to utilize the force of the US National Guard in liberal-led cities, and crack down on undocumented immigrants.
Other plans include a “top-to-bottom overhaul” of the Department of Justice — so as to end its historical independence and make it more of a personal “enforcer” for Donald Trump (Vladimir Putin-style); a plan for the Pentagon to abolish its so-called “woke” agenda regarding diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives; bolstering political appointees in the Dept. of Homeland Security “to maximize law enforcement capacity;” prosecuting anyone who provides abortion pills by mail; and castrating the Justice Dept. from its ability to prosecute Trump for anything, ever — effectively giving him free rein to commit whatever crimes he desires.
“We need to flood the zone with conservatives,” said Paul Dans, director of the 2025 Presidential Transition Project and a former Trump administration official who spoke with glee about the planned undertaking.
“The president Day One will be a wrecking ball for the administrative state,” said Russ Vought, a former Trump administration and current president at the conservative Center for Renewing America, who is deeply involved in the effort to implement Project 2025.
Constitutionalists are understandably concerned about the possibilities.
“It frightens me,” said Mary Guy, a professor of public administration at the University of Colorado Denver, who is warning anyone who will listen that the idea would bring a return to a political spoils system. “We have a democracy that is at risk of suicide. Schedule F is just one more bullet in the gun,” she added.
When Donald Trump says he wants to “Make America Great Again,” Project 2025 and Agenda 47 are what he’s referring to.
So, if anyone is fearful of potential Trump-led violence in the coming months, the real fear should be of a 2nd Trump term and the conservative plan to turn back the clock on all the advancements for minorities, women, gays and lesbians, and others over the past century.
