Recently, former President Jimmy Carter went public with his beliefs that much of the push back against President Obama during his short tenure in office is racially motivated. Soon after, the White House and other surrogates such as former President Bill Clinton were quick to denounce Carter’s opinion as “misplaced.” And they HAD to. The first African-American U.S. President in history can surely not be seen advancing the argument that any criticism directed toward him is actually loosely veiled racism. But did President Carter have a point?

Granted, everyone who opposes health care reform is not a racist. But there are indeed racists who are hiding behind the cover of health care reform to express their rather obvious opinions against Mr. Obama’s race. No one can deny that. Some are successfully able to get away with it — like when saying they don’t want their children hearing
a speech from the President (even though they allow their children to hear
speeches from other President’s). But others are not so successful at getting away with it — like when they refer to the President of the United States as “that boy,” or email a photo of watermelons growing on the White House lawn, or depicting the President as some sort of jungle witch-doctor. Anyone would be hard pressed to explain how that has
EVERYTHING to do with health care but
NOTHING to do with race. And I won’t even discuss the thousands of Americans who are still somehow CONVINCED, despite mounds of evidence, that Mr. Obama is Kenyan and NOT American.

Every major news outlet from CNN to FOX NEWS has held serious and countless discussions on the subject, often getting nowhere and convincing no one. But sometimes, it takes humor to make us drop our guards and recognize what’s often right in front of our face. So kudos to Stephen Colbert of Comedy Central’s THE COLBERT REPORT for really driving the point home by planting the seeds of “common sense.” In a recent take on the matter, Colbert joked: “Every time a racist criticizes the President, someone cries ‘RACISM’!” His comedic use of sarcasm is priceless in this discussion of racism.
