Reconsidering Columbus Day

For centuries we’ve been told that Christopher Columbus “discovered” America. He didn’t. What he did was STOLE America, since it was already inhabited by its indigenous people.
Imagine someone walking into your home and telling you they have “founded” your residence and that it is now theirs and NOT yours. Well, that is what Columbus did.
When he first arrived, the people in what would later be called America were welcoming and polite to him. Realizing he could use their politeness to his advantage, he went back to Spain and gathered an army. He then returned to the new land, beat and killed the men, raped the women, then TOOK America.
This year, Seattle and Minneapolis will recognize today not as Columbus Day, but as “Indigenous People’s Day.” These are just a few of a number of cities choosing to shift the holiday’s focus from Christopher Columbus to the people he encountered in the New World and their modern-day descendants.
Last week, the Seattle City Council voted to reinvent the holiday as a celebration of “the thriving cultures and values of Indigenous Peoples in our region.” The Minneapolis City Council followed suit last April by voting “to reflect upon the ongoing struggles of Indigenous people on this land, and to celebrate the thriving culture and value that Dakota, Ojibwa and other indigenous nations add to our city.”

@DJ- Thank You so much for continuing to make this topic a feature post every year, on the day set aside to honor such a despicable and dishonorable human-being. Christopher Columbus. How I wish most other socio-political-cultural blog sites would do as you do….which MIGHT bring a bit of pressure to bare on a mainstream news media too Spineless to even ask the important question – WHY? (knowing all that we now know about Columbus) do We still celebrate such a person?! Re: Cities opting to change the holiday name to "Indigenous People's Day" What!?! With all due respect,that..to me..seems pretty Spineless also. Why not call the day "Native American Indian Day"..? Are the Native American Indians not worthy of at least a National holiday whereby ALL of America can join them in honoring their culture, their history, sacrifices and contributions to the building of this country? I say it's… Read more »
