REFUSE TO CERTIFY is the new Republican election scheme that is set to wreak havoc on the 2022 midterm election, the 2024 presidential election, and beyond.
Politics :
Donald Trump introduced the GOP to his REFUSE TO CERTIFY election scheme when he tried but failed to convince then-VP Mike Pence not to certify Joe Biden as the rightful winner of the 2020 presidential election. Now, not only are Republicans strategizing to use the same scheme in every election from now on, but some party members are already implementing it on the state and local levels.
According to Salon, Republican election officials in at least 3 states have refused to certify primary votes because they didn’t like the results. Â
Trump-backed Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake and Nevada US Senate candidate Adam Laxalt each borrowed a page from the Trump Book of Dirty Tricks and claimed there would be “election stealing” even before a single vote was cast. Â
Colorado secretary of state candidate Tina Peters twice demanded recounts of her Republican primary race after losing by double digits.
Nevada gubernatorial candidate Joey Gilbert filed a lawsuit alleging that his GOP primary loss was a “mathematical impossibility” (even after a recount he requested confirmed the results were accurate).
Now, using the Trump scheme as their guide, county officials in New Mexico, Nevada, and Pennsylvania have attempted to circumvent their state laws by refusing to sign off on the certification of primary results.
Citing Trump’s flim-flam argument that Dominion voting machines “flipped” votes from him to Joe Biden, the Republican commissioner in Otero County, New Mexico used the same scheme to refuse to certify their primary election results as recently as last month. Republican commissioners in rural Esmeralda County, Nevada, also refused to certify their county’s votes last month, claiming residents registered unspecified concerns about the election process.
If that wasn’t enough, officials in the Republican-led counties of Berks, Fayette, and Lancaster in Pennsylvania also refused to count all valid votes from their May 17th primary election for Senate, Congress, governor, and the state legislature. They listed a non-existent problem with undated mail-in ballots as their reason for needing to refuse to certify the election results.
“It is imperative that every legal vote cast by a qualified voter is counted,” Molly Stieber, a spokeswoman for Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, told The New York Times. “The 64 other counties in Pennsylvania have complied and accurately certified their election results. Counties cannot abuse their responsibility for running elections as an excuse to unlawfully disenfranchise voters.”
Regrettably, her display of concern could be all for naught as crooked GOP operatives have now figured out they never have to accept the will of the people ever again. In fact, Donald Trump’s January 6th Capitol Hill insurrection has handed Republicans the blueprint they need to negate every single election for perpetuity. Â
If a future election reveals an outcome the GOP doesn’t favor, they merely need to refuse to certify the results — then make up fictitious arguments and create legal cases that will get tied up in the courts for years.
And, if they succeed, that will undermine the longstanding tradition of election integrity and be the end of democracy. Or, in other words, 2020 will be seen as a mere rehearsal for what’s about to come.
