REMEMBERING DON CORNELIUS
Love, Peace and Soul no more!
Don Cornelius, creator of the iconic dancing show “Soul Train” was found dead in his Sherman Oaks, CA home Wednesday morning.
Police arrived at Cornelius’ home around 4 a.m. where they found him dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to sources. Although there were no sign of foul play, the Los Angeles Police Department is investigating.
Cornelius retired as host of “Soul Train” in 1993 due to neurological health concerns, but continued to remain Executive Producer. The show eventually ceased production in 2006. Known as “the hippest trip in America,” it became the longest-running first-run nationally syndicated show in television history, bringing African American music and style to the world for nearly 40 years.
Rest in Peace Don Cornelius.
I was a youngin during the 70s and WE (my sibs and I and EVERY Black kid I knew) were SO into Soul Train EVERY Saturday at 12 Noon (if I recall correctly?) We made it our business to get up, eat, and get our chores done so that we'd be free to "get down" the minute the Soul Train music theme hit the first note. Heck. On occassion, even my mom and grandmom (who was very religious) would sit and watch a little of the show and watch Us (kids) dance to the music..lol. For years, THAT SHOW meant a lot to millions of Black-American youths of ALL ages. R.I.P. Mr. Cornelius…and Thank You!
