Remembering Dr. Joyce Brothers
Noted social and television psychologist Dr. Joyce Brothers has died.
Known as a bridge between advice columnists such as Dear Abby and Ann Landers, Dr. Brothers brought psychology out of its dark stigma and to the masses via the media. Before there was Dr. Ruth or Dr. Phil, there was Dr. Joyce Brothers.
Beginning in the 1950s, she became a fixture on the small screen, hosting her own nationally syndicated TV shows “The Dr. Joyce Brothers Show,” as well as “Ask Dr. Brothers,” “Consult Dr. Brothers” and “Living Easy With Dr. Joyce Brothers.”
She was also a regular guest on “The Tonight Show,” “The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour,” and the game shows “What’s My Line?” and “The Hollywood Squares.”
Dr. Brothers also made TV appearances as herself on “Happy Days,” “Taxi,” “Frasier,” “Baywatch,” “Entourage” and “The Simpsons,” bringing a certain popularity to the subject of psychology that is prevalent to this day.
Dr. Joyce Brothers was 85.
