Remembering ‘Edith Bunker’
The woman best known as Edith Bunker is dead.
Jean Stapleton, whose decades long career culminated as the scattered but grounded wife of Archie Bunker on TV’s “All In The Family,” passed away over the weekend.
According to her son, John Putch, Stapleton “passed away peacefully of natural causes” on Friday at her New York City home “surrounded by friends and her immediate family.”
Stapleton’s career was born on the legitimate stage in her hometown of New York, but quickly moved to small TV roles, including “Philco TV Playhouse” and “Dr. Kildare.” But it was her breakout role as Edith Bunker that cemented her as a household name and defined her career — a role that garnered her 3 Emmy awards in 1971, 1972 and 1978.
Jean Stapleton was 90.
