Republican Civil War, Chaos, Confusion, Continues
Surprise! A Republican Civil War inside the US House of Representatives involving the House Speaker debacle, clashing opinions, and conflicting agendas is causing tensions to rise among the once Grand Ol’ Party.
Politics :
It’s no surprise that the contingent of 8 rogue Republicans (led by Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida) who were responsible for the ouster of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, have left a trail of confusion and chaos following their actions last week. However, the unexpected news is that because the House is still without a speaker and the GOP is nowhere close to coalescing behind a single candidate, members are refusing to compromise and are instead issuing promises of revenge.
Republicans returned to Washington on Monday from their unplanned recess to attend a closed-door meeting and discuss strategy for electing a new leader. Although lawmakers had hoped to avoid the humiliation and dysfunction they showed when McCarthy was chosen as speaker and when he was fired, Rolling Stone is reporting that the “unifying” meeting quickly devolved into a grievance-laden, finger-pointing, Republican Civil War that has some voters questioning if the majority party is actually capable of leading.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana and GOP Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio have, at least so far, failed to convince the required 217 members that they should become the next House Speaker. An endorsement of Jim Jordan from Donald Trump has not moved the needle one iota. Several Republican lawmakers have declared that they will outright refuse to support any candidate other than Kevin McCarthy. The former speaker has made it clear that he’s no longer interested in the job of trying to lead House Republicans. Meanwhile, vengeful members are plotting against the rogue Republicans to get even — and have reportedly devised a secret plan to kick Matt Gaetz out of Congress altogether!
“I’d love to have (Gaetz) out of the conference,” GOP Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska told reporters last week. “He shouldn’t be in the Republican Party,” Bacon added.
“Matt Gaetz is frankly a vile person,” GOP Rep. Mike Lawler said Monday on CNN. “He’s not somebody who’s willing to work as a team. He stands up there, he grandstands, he lies directly to folks.”
Rep. Michael Lawler of New York told reporters that Gaetz should be removed from the Republican organization in the House.
Other Republicans have been busy gathering evidence against Gaetz for alleged sexual misconduct, illegal drug use, and other wrongdoings. In fact, some political observers are calling the moves to get even “junior high school all over again.”
However, for his role in launching the growing Republican Civil War and for remaining fearless despite the knives waiting to stab him in the back, Gaetz has remained undeterred. In fact, he recently doubled down and said that leading the push to oust Kevin McCarthy was worth it, even if he loses his job.
“The voters of Florida’s first congressional district sent me here with about 70% of the vote,” he said Sunday on NBC’s Meet The Press. “Anyone trying to kick me out of Congress because they didn’t like me would have a bone to pick with them,” he concluded.
Interestingly, the US Constitution does allow the House and Senate to “punish its members for disorderly behavior” and “expel a member” with a two-thirds vote in the chamber. So, although lawmakers inside the Republican Civil War can’t seem to unify to select a new House Speaker, they do appear collectively eager to kick Matt Gaetz out sooner rather than later.
