San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, who is facing a sexual harassment lawsuit amid a plethora of allegations of inappropriate advances toward women, announced Friday that he is resigning.
The 70-year-old Filner, a Democrat who was elected San Diego mayor just last year, had endured a mountain of pressure to step down after acknowledging behavior toward women that even he admitted was unacceptable. His former press secretary, Irene McCormack Jackson, sued him in July for sexual harassment. Since then, 17 more women came forward with charges that he groped them and made other unwanted advances.

In an agreement with the San Diego City Council, Filner will step down on August 30th, in exchange for the city offering legal assistance toward his lawsuit. A visibly emotional Filner addressed the council and a room full of reporters, apparently overcome by the consequences of his wayward actions.
“Certainly it was never my intention to be a mayor who went out like this,” Filner said, before making reference to his work with civil rights groups in the 1960’s.
“You know I started my political career facing lynch mobs, and I think we have just faced one here in San Diego,” he said in a tone of defiance. “In a lynch mob mentality, rumors become allegations, allegations become facts, facts become evidence of sexual harassment which have led to demands for my resignation and recall.”
