ROMNEY STUMBLES IN DEBATE
The debate provided Romney one of his last opportunities to catch fire with voters and knock Newt Gingrich out of his way for him to seize the nomination. But Romney’s “play it safe” style just didn’t cut it. Perhaps no one told Romney he is behind in the polls. Perhaps no one explained to Romney that Newt Gingrich, who was once at the very bottom of the pack is now leading him by double digits. Perhaps no one is willing to be direct and honest with Romney, by alerting him that voters just don’t see him as a conservative and they have a big problem with him being a Mormon. It’s evident no one told Romney any of those things, because his debating approach was the same as it was 3 months ago — cool, calm and collected. And that’s not going to get him elected president!
The supposedly “seasoned” Romney made a variety of mistakes Saturday night, including an attempt to make an “out-of-touch” $10,000. bet with Rick Perry over his health care record. But perhaps his biggest blunder was when George Stephanopoulos hit him with a softball question by asking if he was more conservative (his potential weakness) and more electable (his potential strength) than Gingrich. It was a perfect under-handed pitch that Romney could have easily hit out of the park, utilizing one simple answer to remove all doubt about his conservatism. So what was Romney’s reply? Moon mining. Yes, MOON MINING! “We could start with his idea to have a lunar colony that would mine minerals from the moon. I’m not in favor of spending that kind of money to do that,” Romney said.
Really Romney? That was your “go to” answer?? Here was your chance to spell out your conservative principles and attack Newt Gingrich on electability — a perfect “one-two” punch — and all you could come up with was a rambling response about moon mining???
This debate was Romney’s to lose, and that’s exactly what he did. Now let’s see if he’ll stick with his losing trend when voters begin heading to the polls in less than a month.
This was the GOP's 12th debate. I stoppedd watching them after the 6th debate. Viewing a few recaps and reading right-wing blogs for their reactions usually provides me with enough info to tell which way the wind is blowing in GOP world. As DJ noted: In this last debate Romney had a job to do and he Failed miserably. Now Newt appears to be stronger than ever. But the truth is: Romney could've ran a brilliant campaign thus far (he hasn't) and he could've won every debate thus far (he hasn't )_it STILL wouldn't have been enough to impress the majority of Repub *base* voters to support him in their primary…and We all know why.Look. Newt has done Everything under the sun, over the past 30 yrs (politically AND personally). And yet, *base* voters of the so-called Party of High "morals, principals and family values" could NOT care less. Newt's a "Christian" and Romney "ISN'T." If Newt is all the stands between Repub base-voters and Romney (by extension, the establishment) well, those voters seem to be saying they're with Newt. But we'll see in about… Read more »
