Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, wife of President Jimmy Carter, passed away last week at the age of 96. Her life of service was celebrated all week, including a wreath-laying ceremony on Monday at Georgia Southwestern State University followed by lying in repose at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum.
Perhaps the most memorable event of the week was a service held on Tuesday at the Glenn Memorial Church on the campus of Emory University. This special Rosalynn Carter funeral service was attended by President and Mrs. Biden, President Clinton and Secy. Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, Michelle Obama, and (a surprise sighting of) Melania Trump.
President Jimmy Carter also attended the memorial service. Due to his advanced age of 99 and ongoing health concerns, he was wheeled in on a recliner and sat covered in a blanket adorned with an image of his late wife.
According to former first daughter Amy Carter, Mr. Carter is unable to speak. So, in an effort to express his personal sentiments, she read a love letter he once sent to his wife during his stint in the Navy.
“My darling, every time I have ever been away from you I have been thrilled when I returned to discover just how wonderful you are. While I am away I try to convince myself that you really are not, could not be as sweet and beautiful as I remember. But when I see you I fall in love with you all over again. Does that seem strange to you? It doesn’t to me.
Goodbye darling, until tomorrow, Jimmy.”
Personal remarks were also delivered by son Chip Carter, as well as grandson Jason Carter.
“Secretary Clinton, Mrs. Bush. Mrs. Obama, Mrs. Trump, and Dr. Biden, thank you all for coming and acknowledging this remarkable sisterhood that you share with my grandmother. And thank you all for your leadership that you provided for our country and the world,” Jason Carter said.
“Secretary Clinton and Dr. Biden, we also welcome your lovely husbands,” he added, prompting laughter in the room.
The Rosalynn Carter funeral will conclude today with a private service for the family at the Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, GA, followed by a private interment at the Carter family residence.
